PM Vishwakarma Fair in Ludhiana Successfully Links Artisans with Mainstream Markets
A vibrant two-day exhibition celebrating traditional craftsmanship and modern entrepreneurial spirit wrapped up on Monday at the MSME-Development & Facilitation Office (MSME-DFO) in Ludhiana. The event served as a dynamic bridge connecting local artisans directly with urban consumers and the broader market ecosystem.
High-Traffic Marketplace Draws Overwhelming Public Response
The PM Vishwakarma Exhibition-cum-Trade Fair featured approximately 100 beneficiaries of the central government scheme, who displayed an extensive range of products. These included heritage crafts passed down through generations as well as innovative manual tools reflecting contemporary needs. Over the weekend, the fair transformed into a bustling marketplace, attracting an estimated 2,000 visitors who flocked to see and purchase these unique items.
For many participating artisans, this event provided a rare and valuable opportunity to bypass traditional intermediaries and sell their goods directly to end consumers. "The public response was overwhelming," remarked a representative speaking on behalf of the exhibitors. The significant footfall and enthusiastic engagement from both artisans and visitors prompted Pankaj Kumar Jha, Joint Director and Head of Office at MSME-DFO, to announce plans to request the ministry extend the duration of future exhibitions to maximize impact.
Addressing Financial Hurdles: Expediting Pending Loan Cases
Beyond functioning as a trade fair, the event also operated as a critical administrative hub to tackle financial bottlenecks hindering artisan growth. High-level meetings were convened with Lead District Managers (LDMs) from across Punjab and Chandigarh to address a pressing issue: numerous pending loan cases within the system.
Ishita Thaman, Deputy Director of MSME-DFO, led these crucial discussions aimed at expediting loan sanctions and ensuring timely disbursement of funds. The focus included pushing for faster approval of PM Vishwakarma loan applications currently stalled in the banking pipeline. A key objective was to guarantee that financial resources reach artisans promptly, enabling them to scale their businesses effectively and sustain their crafts.
Empowering Artisans with Digital and Marketing Tools
Recognizing that traditional skills require modern support to thrive in today's economy, the DFO organized intensive awareness sessions on digital empowerment. Marketing expert Ganga Ram provided artisans with a comprehensive roadmap for navigating the digital age, covering three essential areas:
- Branding and Packaging: Guidance on transforming raw products into retail-ready goods with appealing presentation.
- Online Platforms: Strategies for securing orders through e-commerce websites and social media channels.
- Success Stories: Practical examples of local artisans who have successfully scaled their operations using these modern tools.
The event concluded with a formal certificate distribution ceremony for all exhibitors. Officials reiterated the government's steadfast commitment to integrating traditional "Vishwakarmas"—the skilled craftspeople—into the modern MSME ecosystem, ensuring their heritage and livelihoods are preserved and promoted for future generations.
