Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Karnataka, R Ashoka, on Monday launched a scathing attack on Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, dismissing his political acumen and comparing him unfavorably to the ancient strategist Chanakya. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Ashoka said, 'D K Shivakumar is no Chanakya. His actions have only created confusion and instability within the ruling coalition.'
Party to act against errant MLAs
Ashoka further stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would soon identify the legislators who have been acting against party discipline. 'We will ensure that such MLAs do not contest elections in the future,' he asserted. The LoP did not name any specific MLA but hinted that internal dissent would not be tolerated.
Political context and impact
The remarks come amid growing tensions within the Karnataka political landscape, with reports of cross-voting in recent legislative council elections and allegations of horse-trading. Shivakumar, who also serves as the state Congress president, has been a key figure in managing coalition dynamics. However, Ashoka's comments reflect the BJP's strategy to target the Deputy CM's leadership style ahead of the 2028 assembly elections.
According to political analysts, the BJP's focus on internal party discipline signals a shift towards consolidating its base after recent electoral setbacks. The party has been grappling with factionalism, and Ashoka's warning is seen as an attempt to rein in dissent before it escalates.
