PNG Connection Applications Skyrocket in Gujarat Cities Amid LPG Supply Concerns

As the West Asia crisis continues to create uncertainty in global energy markets, a significant shift is occurring in Gujarat's urban centers. Fears over potential short supplies of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) have triggered a dramatic surge in applications for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections across key cities in the state.

Government Reassurances Amid Commercial LPG Cuts and Panic Bookings

While government authorities have moved to allay public concerns regarding LPG availability, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Commercial supplies of LPG have faced noticeable reductions, leading to what industry observers describe as "panic bookings" by domestic users seeking to secure their energy needs.

This situation unfolds against the backdrop of heightened tensions in West Asia, where recent developments including the Israeli bombing of fuel depots—termed 'ecocide' by Iran—and former US President Donald Trump's warnings to NATO about war fallout have created additional market volatility.

Ahmedabad Experiences Unprecedented PNG Demand

A senior official from Gujarat Gas Limited, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed there has been a substantial jump in inquiries for PNG connections from both domestic and commercial segments in Ahmedabad.

"Under our special campaign we are doing our best to provide connections within few days of applications," the official stated. "Connections to societies or commercial complexes that already have a PNG line are immediate. In cases where a pipeline needs to be laid, connections can take some days."

Restaurant Industry Leads Commercial Transition

Dilip Thakkar, co-chapter head of the National Restaurants Association of India, revealed that approximately 70% of restaurants in Ahmedabad already utilize PNG connections. "Those using commercial LPG cylinders are seeking PNG connections now, encouraged by how restaurants with PNG connections are operating without a hitch in the current situation," Thakkar explained.

He added an important perspective: "Many are also of the view that there is no need to take long-term decisions based on a short-term crisis." This balanced approach suggests that while immediate concerns are driving applications, businesses remain cautious about overreacting to temporary market conditions.

Vadodara Gas Ltd Reports Surge in Applications

Vadodara Gas Ltd (VGL) has been equally busy processing PNG applications. VGL Managing Director V K Srivastava confirmed that the company currently maintains sufficient gas supply to meet demand. "There is concern about LPG supply and we are doing our best to provide connections at a brisk pace to take the pressure off the oil marketing companies supplying LPG," he stated.

The scale of increased demand becomes clear through specific numbers provided by VGL Administrative Officer Jignesh Gohil: "Against eight to 10 applications a month earlier, we have received 15 applications this month till March 15."

Potential for Tripled Commercial Demand

Industry experts warn that demand for commercial PNG connections could potentially triple if LPG cylinder supply to commercial units remains rationed or constrained. The data from Vadodara illustrates this trend dramatically—the period from March 9 to March 15 alone witnessed 400 new applications for PNG connections.

This surge represents a fundamental shift in how businesses and households approach their energy security. Rather than relying on potentially volatile LPG supplies that require frequent replenishment, more consumers are opting for the relative stability of piped natural gas infrastructure.

The transition to PNG offers several advantages in the current climate:

  • Reduced dependency on LPG cylinder deliveries
  • More consistent supply through established pipelines
  • Lower vulnerability to international market fluctuations
  • Simplified logistics for commercial establishments

As the West Asia situation continues to evolve, energy providers in Gujarat are working overtime to accommodate this unprecedented demand while maintaining service quality and safety standards. The coming weeks will reveal whether this represents a temporary adjustment or a permanent shift in the state's energy consumption patterns.
