Pune Faces Severe Commercial LPG Supply Disruption Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies across Pune have been severely curtailed since Monday following directives from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Distributors have been instructed to prioritize cylinder allocations for hospitals and educational institutions, creating significant uncertainty for restaurants, hotels, and other commercial users regarding future deliveries.

Distributors Running Low on Stocks

LPG distributors across the city report that existing stocks are already running dangerously low, with the full impact expected to become visible over the coming days. One distributor revealed to media sources that agencies were required to submit detailed lists of specific institutional customers before any supplies could be released.

"They specifically asked for comprehensive lists of educational institutes and hospitals," the distributor explained. "We must submit documented proof that each customer is properly registered. Only that verified inventory will be dispatched, and we must provide written undertakings that cylinders will be supplied exclusively to those designated hospitals or educational institutions."

Supply Chain Completely Disrupted

The distributor further disclosed that the last dispatch of commercial cylinders occurred two days prior to the order implementation, with no fresh supplies reaching distribution centers since the internal directive was issued.

"The final commercial cylinder dispatch happened on Saturday," the distributor stated. "Even vehicles that were filled on Monday were not dispatched following the order. Our existing stock has been completely exhausted. Across Pune, some distributors might retain minimal remaining stock, but it will not last beyond a single day at most."

Rationing Measures Implemented

Distributors have begun implementing strict rationing measures, supplying cylinders exclusively to regular registered customers in essential categories. "We are not distributing cylinders randomly to anyone," emphasized the same distributor. "We are providing them only to genuinely needy and regularly registered customers who fall within approved categories."

Hotel Industry Braces for Operational Crisis

Hotel operators throughout Pune have begun urgently contacting distributors as they anticipate severe disruptions to kitchen operations. The distributor noted the widespread concern within the hospitality sector.

"All five-star hotels, three-star establishments, and shopping malls with food outlets will be significantly affected if supply does not resume promptly," the distributor warned. "Most are calling because they have guests currently staying with them and require gas for daily operational needs."

Government Response and Policy Changes

The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has officially addressed the situation through social media platforms, acknowledging the supply constraints.

The ministry stated: "In light of current geopolitical disruptions affecting fuel supply and constraints on LPG availability, the ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for increased LPG production. This additional production will be allocated specifically for domestic LPG usage."

The ministry further clarified that domestic LPG supply has been prioritized for household consumers, with a mandatory 25-day gap enforced between bookings to prevent hoarding and black marketing of cylinders. Regarding non-domestic supplies, the ministry explicitly stated that imported LPG is being directed primarily to essential non-domestic sectors including hospitals and educational institutions.

"For LPG supply to other non-domestic sectors, a committee comprising three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been established," the announcement continued. "This committee will review representations regarding LPG supply requirements for restaurants, hotels, and other industrial users."

Domestic Consumers Experience Delivery Delays

Pravin Khandalkar, a Pune-based LPG distributor, reported that with the enforcement of the 25-day booking gap, domestic customers who had already exceeded this duration began panic-booking cylinders on Tuesday.

Anub George, a resident of Bopodi, shared his experience: "I visited my agency to book a gas cylinder for my household on Tuesday and encountered significant crowds. They processed my booking but informed me that while deliveries typically occur within two to three days, current timelines have extended to at least one week."

George added: "When I inquired about booking my second cylinder—since most households maintain two—I was informed I could only place that order after 25 days had elapsed from my previous booking. The agency staff confirmed this restriction originated from their main office."

Agency Staff Overwhelmed by Panic Calls

Agency staff members reported receiving numerous calls from anxious customers attempting to book cylinders amid the developing crisis.

"Our delivery drivers have been receiving constant calls throughout the day from customers hoping to expedite their deliveries," a staff member revealed. "There are physical limitations to how many deliveries we can complete within a single day, regardless of customer demand."

The commercial LPG supply disruption in Pune represents a significant challenge for the city's hospitality industry and commercial establishments, with the situation expected to worsen unless supply chains are restored promptly. The geopolitical factors influencing fuel distribution continue to create uncertainty across multiple sectors dependent on reliable LPG access.
