Rajasthan Hospitality Sector Grapples with Sudden LPG Cylinder Shortage
Hotels, restaurants, dhabas, and roadside food vendors across Rajasthan are confronting an abrupt shortage of LPG cylinders following directives from oil marketing companies (OMCs) to distributors to cease fresh bookings for commercial use. The internal advisories, issued on Sunday evening, are designed to redirect limited supplies toward domestic households as availability tightens significantly.
Immediate Impact on Commercial and Domestic Consumers
Deepak Gehlot, president of the LPG Distribution Federation of Rajasthan, confirmed the development, stating, "Distributors have been instructed not to place new indents or orders for commercial cylinders starting Monday." This decision is expected to affect a broad spectrum of non-domestic users, including hotels, caterers, eateries, and roadside vendors, who depend heavily on LPG for their daily operations.
Simultaneously, domestic consumers are experiencing difficulties in obtaining refills of cooking gas. A Jaipur-based distributor revealed, "We are currently out of stock. Supplies may resume in three to four days; until then, even domestic consumers will have to wait." This dual challenge underscores the severity of the supply crunch.
Global Energy Market Disruptions Drive Restrictions
The restrictions emerge against a backdrop of global energy market disruptions triggered by the Iran conflict, which has strained supply chains and driven up prices. Industry representatives highlight that the halt on fresh LPG bookings for commercial use will particularly impact the hospitality sector during peak periods.
With the wedding season in full swing and tourist inflows peaking on weekends, hoteliers express deep concern. Ranvijay Singh, secretary of the Federation of Rajasthan Hotels, emphasized, "The curbs will make it impossible to meet the basic needs of our guests. We plan to approach the chief minister on Tuesday to seek relief." The prospect of operating without cooking gas poses a significant threat to business continuity.
Government Priority and Additional Measures
Officials familiar with the situation indicate that the government's immediate priority is to safeguard household supplies. A source explained, "OMCs conveyed that commercial indents or orders should be suspended so domestic demand can be fully met." This strategic shift aims to prevent shortages in residential areas.
In addition to the commercial booking halt, OMCs imposed new restrictions on LPG refill bookings late last Friday. Under the revised rules, customers cannot book a refill until 25 days after their last cylinder order. These measures have left commercial consumers anxious and households uncertain, with many considering alternatives like induction stoves instead of gas burners.
The combined effect of these policies highlights the broader challenges in energy supply management amid geopolitical tensions, impacting both economic activities and daily life in Rajasthan.
