Renault Elevates India to Central Role in Global Expansion Strategy
French automotive giant Renault has officially designated India as a pivotal global manufacturing and export hub within its ambitious 2030 growth blueprint. This strategic move was unveiled during the presentation of the group's mid-term 'futuREady' strategy in Paris, where top executives emphasized India's critical importance in accelerating international expansion beyond European markets.
India's Strategic Position in Renault's Global Network
Renault is intensifying investments across its five international hubs—Morocco, Türkiye, Latin America, South Korea, and India—with India poised to become a primary production and supply center. The company confirmed that India will manufacture a comprehensive range of vehicles for both domestic consumption and global export markets, including models for its alliance partner Nissan.
The decision is driven by India's rapidly evolving automotive landscape, characterized by surging demand for SUVs and a gradual transition toward vehicle electrification. Renault sold 620,000 vehicles in non-European markets in 2025, marking an 11% year-over-year increase, and now views India as essential for sustaining this growth trajectory.
Four New Models and Production Plans
By 2030, Renault plans to introduce four new locally developed models in India, featuring fully electric and full-hybrid vehicles designed to appeal to Indian consumers and multiple export destinations. A cornerstone of this initiative is the production of a new B-segment sub-4 meter SUV, derived from the Renault Bridger Concept.
This versatile model will be offered in combustion, hybrid, or electric configurations depending on regional market requirements. Its initial launch is scheduled for India by the end of 2027, followed by a phased introduction to other international markets.
Leveraging Established Infrastructure and Capabilities
With over 15 years of operational presence in India, Renault intends to capitalize on its robust supplier network and local manufacturing expertise to scale production and bolster export activities. The company has recently assumed full ownership of the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant in Oragadam, near Chennai, which boasts an annual production capacity of up to 480,000 units.
This facility will be instrumental in supporting Renault's global objectives, which include achieving total sales exceeding 2 million vehicles by 2030, with half originating from markets outside Europe. Additionally, the company aims for 100% electrified sales in Europe and 50% electrified sales in international markets by the decade's end.
Renault's strategic focus on India underscores the country's escalating significance in the global automotive industry, positioning it as a key player in the future of mobility and sustainable transportation solutions.
