Sanand Industries Association Addresses Gas Supply Crisis Amid Global Tensions

In Ahmedabad, the Sanand Industries Association (SIA) convened a crucial joint meeting with officials from Gujarat Gas Limited and industrial representatives from the GIDC Sanand estate. The primary agenda was to discuss the severe impact of reduced natural gas supply, a direct consequence of the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. This geopolitical strife has disrupted energy flows, prompting urgent local action.

Industrial Operations at Risk in Auto Supply Chain

SIA president Ajit Shah highlighted that numerous industries within the estate are experiencing operational challenges due to the gas shortage. Many of these units are integral to the automobile supply chain, supplying critical components to major manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki and Honda. Shah issued a stark warning, stating that continued disruption could lead to a significant slowdown in production. Furthermore, if component deliveries are interrupted, it may necessitate temporary shutdowns at some facilities, exacerbating the situation.

Potential Ripple Effects on Employment and Economy

Industry representatives emphasized that any stoppage in operations could trigger a ripple effect across the broader supply chain. This disruption poses a serious threat to employment stability, as the Sanand GIDC estate supports a substantial workforce, including a large number of migrant workers. The potential for job losses and economic stress adds urgency to finding a sustainable solution.

Proposed Solutions and Official Responses

To mitigate disruption and safeguard jobs, the SIA proposed a strategic approach: prioritising gas allocation by categorising industries based on their essential requirements and critical supply-chain linkages. This method aims to ensure that the most vital sectors receive necessary resources first.

In response, officials from Gujarat Gas, including M K Venkat Subramaniam and Harshal N Nayak, assured that efforts would be made to maintain supplies to the extent possible. They also urged industries to practice disciplined consumption of natural gas, emphasising conservation as a key measure during this challenging period.

The meeting underscored the interconnectedness of global events and local economies, highlighting the need for proactive measures to protect industrial output and employment in the face of international conflicts.
