Thiruvananthapuram's Gas Network Embraces Smart Technology for Enhanced Consumer Experience
In a significant move towards modernizing energy infrastructure, the city gas distribution network in Thiruvananthapuram is poised for a comprehensive technological transformation with the introduction of smart meters. This initiative, designed to replace conventional mechanical meters, will empower consumers with accurate billing and real-time monitoring of gas consumption, fostering greater transparency and operational efficiency.
Real-Time Monitoring and Prepaid Billing Systems
The rollout of smart meters will allow households and businesses to track their gas usage in real time, providing immediate insights into consumption patterns. Additionally, consumers will have the option to adopt a prepaid billing system, which is expected to streamline payments and reduce financial uncertainties. Officials have confirmed that the smart meters will be installed free of cost, aiming to minimize barriers to adoption and ensure widespread implementation.
This upgrade is anticipated to significantly decrease disputes related to meter readings, as the automated system eliminates human error. By making the billing process more transparent and consumer-friendly, the initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance service quality in the energy sector.
Current Infrastructure and Expansion Plans
Currently, approximately 26,500 households in Thiruvananthapuram are connected to piped natural gas (PNG), supported by a distribution network spanning nearly 650 kilometers of pipeline across the district. This infrastructure not only serves residential areas but also supplies gas to 25 commercial establishments, including restaurants and small businesses, contributing to local economic activities.
THINK Gas, the agency implementing the project, is focusing on strengthening supply infrastructure to meet the growing demand for natural gas in the region. Deepu John, Deputy Regional Head–Kerala at THINK Gas, emphasized the company's commitment to providing comprehensive energy solutions. "We are dedicated to serving the domestic, commercial, and industrial sectors with PNG, and the transport sector with compressed natural gas (CNG), offering a sustainable energy solution across Alappuzha, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram," he stated.
Strategic Infrastructure Developments
Key infrastructure projects are underway to support the expansion of natural gas distribution. In Thiruvananthapuram, THINK Gas operates an LCNG (liquefied compressed natural gas) station at Kochuveli and Thonnakkal, with plans to open a new facility at Chavara in Kollam soon. This LCNG plant is expected to serve as a major supply hub, bolstering distribution capabilities in both Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram.
Network expansion is also planned for several panchayat areas with limited coverage. In Thiruvananthapuram, new pipeline infrastructure is set to reach Mangalapuram and Vilappil, while Panmana panchayat in Kollam has been identified for inclusion in the next phase of rollout. To minimize disruptions, horizontal directional drilling—a trenchless technology—has been extensively used for laying pipes, particularly under canals and urban infrastructure, reducing road damage and traffic inconveniences.
Boosting CNG Infrastructure for Transportation
Parallel to the PNG upgrades, the expansion of the CNG network is progressing to cater to the increasing number of natural gas-powered vehicles. Plans include establishing five new CNG stations in Thiruvananthapuram and two in Kollam, enhancing accessibility for transport users. THINK Gas aims to add around 6,000 new PNG connections in Thiruvananthapuram by the end of 2026, further extending the reach of cleaner energy sources.
Environmental and National Benefits
This initiative is part of the national city gas distribution program, which seeks to promote the use of cleaner fuels for cooking, transport, and industrial purposes.
