Vidyasagar Setu Closed for 16 Hours on Sunday for Repairs

Kolkata: The Vidyasagar Setu remained closed for a continuous 16-hour period on Sunday to facilitate ongoing repair and rehabilitation efforts. The work, which includes the replacement of stay cables, holding cables, and bearings, is being carried out in phases by the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners. During this period, the movement of all types of vehicles was restricted on the bridge and its ramps.

Traffic Diversion Measures

The Kolkata Traffic Police implemented diversion plans until 9 pm to assist the repair operations. Vehicles coming from the Zeerut Island side along AJC Bose Road were redirected from Turf View towards Hastings Crossing, allowing them to access St Georges Gate Road, Strand Road, and the Howrah Bridge. Similarly, vehicles traveling along KP Road from the J&N island side towards Vidyasagar Setu were diverted from 11 Furlong Gate towards Hastings Crossing and then onto the Howrah Bridge. Additionally, vehicular traffic was directed via arterial roads as and when required.

Impact on Commuters

The closure caused significant inconvenience for commuters, with many having to take longer alternative routes. The authorities advised travelers to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternate bridges such as the Howrah Bridge or Rabindra Setu. The repair work is part of a larger maintenance program aimed at ensuring the structural integrity and safety of the Vidyasagar Setu, which is a vital link between Kolkata and Howrah.
