Bhubaneswar Unveils Major Decongestion Plan with 37 Road Projects and Three New ROBs
In a significant move to address escalating traffic congestion in the state capital, the Odisha Public Works Department has formulated an extensive Bhubaneswar decongestion strategy. This ambitious plan encompasses 37 road development initiatives, including the construction of three new road overbridges (ROBs) in collaboration with the railways.
Budget Session Reveals Comprehensive Infrastructure Overhaul
The details of this decongestion blueprint were disclosed during the ongoing Budget session of the state assembly by Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan. The minister was responding to an inquiry from MLA Dhurba Charan Sahoo regarding governmental measures to manage Bhubaneswar's rapid urbanization.
Minister Harichandan emphasized that the plan is meticulously designed to accommodate the city's swift urban expansion, notable population surge, increased vehicle density, and the daily influx of individuals for employment, education, and other activities.
The primary objectives include widening crucial arterial routes, enhancing existing roadways, and establishing new connections where necessary, all aimed at alleviating congestion and promoting seamless mobility across the metropolitan area.
Strategic ROBs to Eliminate Railway Crossing Delays
The three proposed ROBs, strategically positioned at key bottleneck locations, are intended to eradicate prolonged waiting periods at railway level crossings, thereby ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow. Collectively, the 37 projects will target major corridors, emerging urban sectors, and newly developing residential zones.
However, local residents have voiced concerns about the urgent need for timely project execution. "Announcements are positive, but projects must be completed punctually. Numerous stretches remain excavated for months, exacerbating chaos," remarked Sasmita Patnaik, a resident of Samanta Vihar.
Patnaik highlighted the critical stretch between Acharya Vihar and Sainik School, which has been under construction for an extended period. "This is a vital route frequently used by ambulances. The sluggish pace of work is genuinely worsening the situation," she added.
Commuters and Businesses Anticipate Relief
Commuters traversing high-density routes expressed optimism that the new ROBs will provide much-needed relief. "Level crossings significantly impede traffic during peak hours. An ROB in our vicinity would transform the daily commute," stated Manas Ranjan Dash from VSS Nagar.
Local entrepreneurs also believe that improved road infrastructure will bolster business prospects. "Customers often avoid congested areas due to traffic jams. Road widening could increase foot traffic," noted Rakesh Sahu, a shopkeeper near Laxmi Vihar.
Reflecting on the city's growth, software professional Priyanka Mishra commented, "As a rapidly expanding IT and education hub, modern road infrastructure is indispensable. This decongestion plan represents a crucial upgrade for Bhubaneswar's future."
