Pune Metro Expansion: Swargate-Katraj Line to Reach Shivapur and Connect to Outer Ring Road
The City Improvement Committee (CIC) of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given its unanimous approval for a significant extension of the city's Metro network. In a meeting held on Friday at the civic headquarters, the committee greenlit a proposal to extend the Swargate-Katraj Metro line all the way to Shivapur, with further plans to connect it to the outer ring road being developed in that area.
Strategic Extension for Future Development
Committee chairman Smita Vaste explained the rationale behind this decision. "The extension has been approved considering the future development expected ahead of Katraj towards the Pune-Kolhapur-Bengaluru highway up to Shivapur," she stated. "Residential and commercial activities have already increased substantially in this area over the last few years."
Vaste further elaborated on the integrated planning approach. "With the state government already constructing a ring road ahead of Shivapur, we have proposed connecting the Metro extension to this same infrastructure," she added, highlighting the coordinated development vision.
Current Metro Progress and Official Response
Maha Metro has already initiated preliminary groundwork for the 5.5-kilometer-long Swargate-Katraj underground Metro line. This crucial segment will feature five underground stations and, upon completion, will enable commuters to travel seamlessly from Katraj (Pune's southern boundary) all the way to Pimpri.
However, when contacted by media representatives, Maha Metro officials indicated they have not yet received any formal communication regarding the Shivapur extension proposal. "The Maha Metro will take up the proposal for a detailed study after receiving an official letter from PMC," officials clarified, emphasizing the need for proper procedural channels.
Next Steps and Commuter Concerns
The approved proposal will now be referred to the Pune Municipal Corporation's general body for further approval and is expected to be discussed in upcoming meetings. This represents the next critical step in making the extension a reality.
Meanwhile, regular commuters on the Katraj route have expressed concerns about project timelines. One commuter pointed out, "The groundwork for the Katraj Metro line has already been delayed. The project was sanctioned last year, but there's no visible progress yet." Another suggested, "The authorities should simultaneously start work on all proposed routes to avoid administrative delays."
Broader Transportation Vision
This Metro extension represents part of Pune's broader strategy to enhance urban mobility and accommodate the city's rapid growth.
