Karnataka Doubles Down on Deep Tech to Secure Startup Leadership
In a decisive move to solidify its position as India's undisputed startup capital, the Karnataka government convened a high-level meeting of its 'Vision Group on Startups' on Tuesday. The session aimed to assess the current ecosystem and strategically chart the course for the next phase of growth, with a concentrated emphasis on deep technology, regional expansion, and robust funding mechanisms.
Strategic Review and Vision for the Future
Chaired by prominent venture capitalist Prashant Prakash, the Vision Group comprises leaders from industry, academia, and the startup community, tasked with guiding policy and strategic direction. During the meeting, members, alongside top officials from the IT and Biotechnology departments, meticulously reviewed the progress of key initiatives and deliberated on measures to strengthen Karnataka's standing as India's premier startup and deep tech hub.
"Karnataka has cultivated one of the most formidable startup ecosystems in the nation, and the forthcoming growth phase will be propelled by deep tech innovation, enhanced industry-academia collaboration, and expansion into emerging regions," stated Prashant Prakash. "The Vision Group is committed to ensuring that Karnataka continues to foster high-impact startups while simultaneously improving access to capital, mentorship, and market opportunities."
Inclusive Ecosystem and Regional Expansion
Echoing these sentiments, N Manjula, IAS, Secretary of the Department of Electronics, IT, Biotechnology, and Science & Technology, highlighted the government's dedication to building a more inclusive ecosystem. "The government is focused on creating a more accessible and inclusive startup environment across the state, with targeted interventions to support founders at every stage of their journey," she explained, noting that enhanced infrastructure and program delivery will be crucial for enabling growth beyond Bengaluru.
Key focus areas discussed during the meeting included:
- Strengthening the deep tech ecosystem by expanding centers of excellence in fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and electronics.
- Implementing a hub-and-spoke model to extend capabilities to emerging cities.
- Promoting startup growth beyond Bengaluru through district-level hackathons, boot camps, and targeted interventions in Tier 2 and Tier 3 regions.
Enhanced Funding and Policy Framework
On the funding front, members explored ways to bolster existing initiatives like the Elevate program and introduce an "Elevate Next" initiative. This new effort is designed to support deep tech startups with higher-value funding, along with faster disbursement and improved monitoring mechanisms.
Enhancing the startup policy framework emerged as another critical priority, with proposed measures including:
- Increased patent support and R&D grants.
- Internship assistance and incentives for employers.
- Better data systems to track startup performance and elevate Karnataka's position in national rankings.
Infrastructure and Global Partnerships
The meeting also concentrated on expanding incubation infrastructure, mentorship networks, and co-working spaces across key cities. Additionally, efforts to boost global partnerships were emphasized to position Karnataka as a leading innovation hub on the international stage.
The Vision Group underscored the importance of a more integrated, founder-centric ecosystem with stronger alignment across funding, incubation, mentorship, and market access to drive the next phase of growth. The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including N Manjula and Rahul Sharanappa Sankannur, IAS, along with numerous industry representatives.
