Buxar Railway Station Set for Major Transformation into Key Junction
Significant development work is accelerating to transform Buxar railway station into a major railway junction. With an estimated investment of around Rs 30 lakh, this ambitious project focuses on expanding infrastructure to handle increased train traffic and strengthen rail connectivity across the region. Often hailed as the gateway to Bihar, the station's upgrade is a response to its growing importance.
Expansion Plans: New Platforms and Modern Tracks
Currently operating with three platforms, Buxar station will see the addition of two new platforms—numbered 4 and 5. These will be constructed on the southern side of the existing platform number 3. The design will mirror the current structure between platforms 2 and 3, allowing for efficient handling of trains on separate lines.
Each new platform will be approximately 650 metres long, a length specifically chosen to accommodate modern 24-coach LHB trains along with their engines. To make space for this expansion, the middle siding line at the station's southern end—currently used for parking MEMU and other trains overnight—will be removed. The remaining two siding lines will be developed into loop lines and connected to the new platforms 4 and 5.
Simultaneously, the tracks linked to the existing platforms 1, 2, and 3 are being upgraded with advanced ballastless (slab) track technology. This modern system is expected to bring multiple benefits:
- Reduction in frequent sleeper replacement.
- Enhanced track stability and safety.
- Easier cleaning along platform edges.
- Improved overall aesthetic appearance of the station.
Driving Factors and Future Connectivity
The push for expansion is driven by a notable increase in train operations from Buxar. In recent years, several long-distance trains have begun originating from here, including the Buxar-Tatanagar Express and the Buxar-Bilaspur Weekly Express. The station also sees a surge in special trains during festival seasons. These developments, coupled with longer halts and increased parking needs, have made additional platforms and siding facilities essential.
In a parallel development that will significantly boost regional connectivity, a new 11.1-km railway line is being laid between Bhadaura station on the Buxar-DDU section and Karma station on the Dildarnagar-Tadighat-Ghazipur line. This line will act as a crucial bypass, enabling direct movement of trains from Ghazipur to Patna, Ara, and Buxar. Officials confirm that land acquisition for this project is in its final stages and construction is already underway.
To support the rising number of train operations, the railways is also planning new siding lines and a washing pit. Sufficient railway land is reportedly available between Chausa and Baruna for these maintenance facilities.
Official Statements and Expected Impact
Railway authorities have emphasised the strategic importance of this upgrade. Vindhyachal Pandey, Railway Traffic Inspector at Buxar, stated, "Buxar is an important station on the Patna-DDU route. These upgrades will improve passenger facilities and help manage increasing train traffic."
A railway engineer associated with the project added, "The new platforms and track modernisation are planned to meet future demand, with a focus on safety, cleanliness, and smooth operations."
The comprehensive overhaul of Buxar railway station marks a significant step in modernising Bihar's rail infrastructure. It promises not only to enhance passenger experience but also to solidify the station's role as a vital transport hub, facilitating smoother and more efficient travel across eastern India.
