Tragic Early Morning Accident Claims Engineer's Life
A devastating construction site accident claimed the life of a 40-year-old civil engineer at the under-construction Patliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Murthy Sajja, originally from Petbashirabad in Telangana, was crushed under a heavy iron gate in what police are calling a tragic workplace incident.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to Kankarbagh police station SHO Abhay Kumar, the accident occurred around 4 am when Murthy was attempting to close the main iron gate of the sports complex. The incident happened immediately after a truck carrying stone chips had finished unloading construction materials and departed from the site.
"When the truck left, Murthy went to close the iron gate. As he was sliding the gate, it suddenly collapsed and fell directly on him," SHO Kumar explained during his statement to reporters.
The remote location and early morning timing proved fatal for the engineer. With no witnesses present and the area largely deserted, Murthy remained trapped beneath the heavy gate for nearly four hours without anyone hearing his cries for help. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries before rescue could arrive.
Discovery and Investigation
The grim discovery was made around 6 am when a security guard from the adjacent campus arrived at the complex. Police were immediately alerted, and Murthy's body was transported to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for postmortem examination.
Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led to the gate collapse. "Our team is thoroughly investigating the incident, including examining potential safety lapses at the construction site," confirmed SHO Abhay Kumar.
Murthy had been supervising the project on behalf of a contractor since May of this year and was residing on the first floor of the boys' hostel within the sports complex premises. Police have notified his family members in Telangana about the tragic incident.
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine whether proper safety protocols were being followed at the construction site and what specific factors contributed to the gate's sudden collapse.
