Farmers Stage Massive Rally in Kurukshetra to Oppose India-US Trade Deal
Hundreds of farmers, united under the banner of BKU (Charuni) and various other farm organizations, held a significant protest rally at the Pipli grain market in Kurukshetra on Monday. The demonstration was strategically organized on the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, drawing participants from multiple states including Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The primary focus of the protest was to voice strong opposition against the proposed India-US trade agreement, which farmers fear will have detrimental effects on Indian agriculture.
Key Demands and Criticisms from Farm Leaders
BKU (Charuni) president Gurnam Singh Charuni, addressing the gathering virtually due to an injury, led the criticism against the trade deal. He argued that such an agreement could severely undermine the livelihoods of farmers across the nation. Several other speakers at the rally echoed these concerns, calling for a unified front to resist the proposed pact. The farmers presented a comprehensive list of demands, emphasizing the need for immediate government action.
- Scrapping of the India-US trade deal to protect domestic agricultural interests.
- Legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) on all crops to ensure fair remuneration.
- Complete loan waivers to alleviate financial burdens on farmers.
- Withdrawal of proposed amendments related to seeds and electricity that could increase costs.
- CBI probe into the alleged paddy procurement scam in Haryana for transparency.
- Rs 150 per quintal bonus on wheat, similar to incentives provided in Rajasthan.
Administrative Response and Assurances
In response to the protest, Kurukshetra deputy commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena and SP Nitish Aggarwal visited the venue to engage with the farmers. They assured the gathering that a meeting with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has been scheduled for April 2 to discuss all the raised demands in detail. The deputy commissioner also highlighted several administrative measures aimed at addressing farmer concerns.
- Consideration of suggestions from farmer unions regarding wheat procurement processes.
- Implementation of geofencing technology to enhance transparency during the upcoming procurement season.
- Examination of withdrawal of cases registered against farmers during previous protests, subject to necessary approvals.
These assurances were met with cautious optimism by the protesting farmers, who emphasized the need for concrete actions rather than promises. The rally underscored the growing unrest among agrarian communities over trade policies and economic reforms, signaling potential for further protests if demands are not met promptly.
