Halwara Airport Flight Launch Delayed Again, Ludhiana Residents Express Frustration
For the residents of Ludhiana, the promise of flights from Halwara Airport has become a distant dream, akin to chasing a rainbow's end. Despite repeated assurances and a high-profile virtual inauguration by the Prime Minister in early February, commercial operations remain firmly grounded, with no clear take-off date in sight.
Virtual Inauguration Fails to Alter Ground Reality
On February 1, a longstanding aspiration seemed to materialize when the Prime Minister virtually inaugurated Halwara Airport, hailed as a crucial link for this industrial city. The event was expected to herald much-needed air connectivity, but more than one and a half months later, the airport stands silent. Sources within the Airport Authority of India (AAI) reveal that flights were initially slated to commence on March 29, aligning with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation's (DGCA) summer schedule. However, with only 10 to 12 days remaining in March, it now appears unlikely that operations will begin this month, primarily because airlines typically initiate ticket bookings well in advance of launch dates.
Airlines Hesitate Despite Prepared Facilities
According to AAI sources, a private airline official inspected Halwara Airport in the first week of March to assess available services and facilities. The AAI has already allotted essential spaces, including a room, ticket booking counter, and other operational areas. Yet, the airline has not taken possession of these spaces, casting uncertainty over the timeline. The private airline is expected to deploy approximately five to six office staff members and 15 to 16 ground staff members to manage operations once they commence. Meanwhile, preparations continue on other fronts: adequate Punjab Police personnel are anticipated to be deployed around March 24, with security staff currently undergoing training likely to complete it by that date.
All Systems Go, But Airlines Hold Back
Officials emphasize that all required facilities are in place, and the airline has obtained necessary permissions to begin operations. Technically, flights could start within days if the airline decides to proceed. However, they have received no communication from the airline regarding an official launch date. This delay has left many Ludhiana residents disappointed, particularly those who had made travel plans based on expected flight commencements.
Residents Voice Disappointment and Adjust Plans
Dr. Ravinder Vatsyayan, a city resident, described the delay as unfortunate, noting he had planned to travel from Halwara Airport in late March but has now shifted his plans to fly from Chandigarh airport due to the lack of clarity. He expressed hope that the launch would not be pushed further. City-based architect Sanjay Goyal added that Ludhiana has suffered for decades without a proper airport, and the continued delay post-inauguration does not reflect well on the project's execution.
Likely Flight Timings and Aircraft Details
As per AAI sources, two flights are planned: the first is expected to land at Halwara Airport around 9 a.m. and depart at approximately 9:40 a.m., while the second flight's arrival is around 3 p.m. with a likely departure at 3:40 p.m. These flights will operate between Halwara Airport and IGI Delhi using an Airbus A320, capable of carrying 180 passengers.
Uncertainty Persists as Decision Rests with Airlines
Uncertainty continues to cloud the start of commercial flights from Halwara Airport. While all facilities and permissions are ready, the final decision now rests with the airline. For now, Ludhiana residents can only wait, with uncertainty remaining the only constant in this long-awaited aviation endeavor.
