India-US Trade Agreement Fully Safeguards Agricultural Interests, Assures Minister Chouhan
Amidst opposition allegations concerning the India-US trade deal, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday provided strong reassurances that the agreement comprehensively protects India's agricultural interests. He specifically highlighted the security of the farm and dairy sectors, emphasizing that the welfare of farmers remains a top priority.
Complete Protection for Key Agricultural Commodities
Minister Chouhan underlined that India's staple grains, fruits, major crops, millets, and dairy products face no threat whatsoever under the new trade terms. He stated that the interests of both small and large farmers have been fully safeguarded, ensuring that the agreement will generate fresh opportunities rather than risks for Indian agriculture.
"Farmers are our 'Annadata', the providers of life. Their welfare is the nation's welfare, and their interests are absolutely secure," Chouhan declared, reinforcing the government's commitment to agricultural stakeholders.
Export Potential and Economic Benefits
Addressing the media, Chouhan highlighted the significant export potential unlocked by the agreement. He noted that India already exports rice to numerous countries, including the United States, with recent exports valued at approximately Rs 63,000 crore.
The minister explained that reduced tariffs will directly benefit India's rice, spices, and textile exports. He further emphasized that growth in textile exports will positively impact millions of cotton-growing farmers, providing them with enhanced market access and economic stability.
Clarifications on Market Access and Protections
Responding to concerns about potential adverse effects on small farmers, Chouhan stressed that no sudden or disruptive entry of foreign products into the Indian market will occur. He assured that domestic agricultural markets remain protected under the agreement.
Regarding confusion sparked by a recent social media post from the US Treasury Secretary about increased access for American farm products, Chouhan referenced Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's clarifications in Parliament. He reiterated that India has not opened its markets in any manner that places pressure on domestic farmers, and the protections for key agricultural commodities remain fully intact.

The minister's statements aim to dispel fears and provide clarity on the trade deal's implications. He affirmed that the agreement is designed to bolster India's agricultural exports while maintaining robust safeguards for local producers.
