Meghalaya Strawberry Festival 2026 Promotes Agro-Tourism

Meghalaya Strawberry Festival 2026 Inaugurated to Boost Agro-Tourism and Entrepreneurship

The Meghalaya Strawberry Festival 2026 officially commenced on Tuesday at the picturesque Wah-Ling-Syiem Meadows in the village of Smit, located approximately 15 kilometers from Shillong. This vibrant event underscores the state government's dedicated initiatives to promote agro-tourism and foster entrepreneurship through the cultivation of strawberries, a high-value crop with significant economic potential.

Creating Direct Market Access for Farmers and Entrepreneurs

The festival is strategically designed to provide direct market access for local farmers and entrepreneurs by facilitating direct engagement with buyers and consumers. Numerous stalls at the event displayed a wide array of fresh strawberries alongside an impressive selection of value-added products. These included homemade jams, refreshing juices, delectable desserts, fine wines, and various other processed items derived from strawberries, highlighting the versatility and marketability of this fruit.

Visitors to the festival are offered a unique farm-to-table experience, allowing them to savor strawberry products directly from the source. This immersive approach not only enhances consumer awareness but also supports local agricultural practices and sustainable farming methods.

Government Support and Export Potential Highlighted

Rosetta Mary Kurbah, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, emphasized the export potential of strawberries during the festival's inauguration. She stated, "Strawberries have substantial export potential, and their by-products are even more marketable in both domestic and international markets. The state government has implemented multiple schemes to develop high-value agriculture crops and strengthen their supply chains, including the PRIME initiative, alongside various central government programs."

Encouraging farmers to actively engage with the horticulture department, Kurbah detailed that the state government distributes three distinct varieties of strawberry seeds: Winter Dawn, Sweet Sensation, and Festival. These varieties are selected for their adaptability and quality, aiming to boost crop yields and enhance product diversity.

Strategic Initiatives for Agricultural Development

The festival serves as a platform to showcase the state's broader agricultural strategies, which focus on:

  • Promoting Agro-Tourism: Integrating tourism with agriculture to create additional revenue streams and raise awareness about local farming practices.
  • Supporting Entrepreneurship: Encouraging the development of small businesses centered around strawberry cultivation and processing.
  • Enhancing Supply Chains: Leveraging state and central schemes to improve logistics, storage, and distribution networks for agricultural products.

By highlighting these efforts, the Meghalaya Strawberry Festival 2026 aims to position the state as a leader in innovative agricultural practices and sustainable economic development, benefiting both rural communities and the broader economy.
