Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal engaged in a series of strategic meetings with international leaders to tackle pressing global trade issues and enhance bilateral economic partnerships. These discussions occurred on Wednesday during the sidelines of the 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14) of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva, focusing on reforms and collaborative efforts.
Key Engagements with Global Counterparts
Agrawal met with Ambassador Joseph Barloon, the Deputy United States Trade Representative and Chief of the Permanent Mission of the United States to the WTO. They delved into the MC14 agenda, exploring strategic avenues to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen bilateral trade ties between India and the US.
In another significant interaction, Agrawal conversed with Fareed bin Saeed Al-Asaly, the Deputy Governor for International Organisations and Agreements of Saudi Arabia. Their dialogue centered on ongoing challenges in global trade, the MC14 agenda, and ways to enhance bilateral economic relations.
The Secretary also held productive talks with Allan B Gepty, the Undersecretary for the International Trade Group at the Department of Trade and Industry of the Philippines. Discussions covered WTO reforms, promoting bilateral trade under the India-Philippines Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), and ongoing negotiations related to the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) and market access issues.
Expanding Economic Reach in South America and Beyond
To bolster India's economic presence in South America, Agrawal met with Paula Estevez Weinstein, the Vice-Minister of International Economic Relations of Chile. They reviewed progress in the India-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations, aiming for an early conclusion, and explored methods to further strengthen bilateral economic cooperation and trade.
Agrawal also engaged with Ram Prasad Subedi, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations and WTO in Geneva. Their conversation addressed the MC14 agenda and various aspects of it, alongside discussions on enhancing trade relations and streamlining trade through institutional mechanisms.
On the same day, Agrawal met with Ambassador Patricia Frutos, Vice-Minister for International Trade and Integration of Paraguay. They had productive discussions focused on the MC14 agenda and ways to enhance bilateral trade between the two nations.
