A significant seminar dedicated to shaping the future of Madurai is set to take place this weekend. Titled MDU Raising, the event will focus on the city's long-term development and untapped growth potential.
Event Details and Core Objectives
The seminar is scheduled for Saturday at the Agro Food Trade Centre (AFTC) campus in Sikandar Chavadi. It is being organized by the Agri and All Trade Chamber along with its platform, You Export (YE). According to the chamber's president, S Rethinavelu, the gathering has three primary goals. First, to educate participants about the various developmental projects currently underway in Madurai. Second, to deliberate on the proposals outlined in the Madurai Master Plan. And third, to foster constructive discussions that can influence the state government and the Madurai corporation.
Vision for a Transformed Madurai
Rethinavelu expressed strong approval for specific aspects of the Master Plan, particularly the announcement of various industrial cluster zones and the planning of exclusive pathways for non-motorized transport. These pathways are seen as a crucial step towards streamlining the city's often congested road traffic. The overarching vision, as stated by Rethinavelu, is to transform Madurai into a clean city with robust infrastructure. This transformation aims to spur growth across multiple sectors including industry, trade, exports, tourism, and water management, ultimately achieving the ambitious goal of a 'Sparkling Madurai'.
However, he also acknowledged a prevailing concern. Despite several past projects, there is a widespread feeling that Madurai, which serves as the gateway to Southern Tamil Nadu, has not yet achieved the level of growth it rightfully deserves.
Key Participants and Broader Dialogue
The seminar promises to be a platform for diverse voices. Confirmed participants include Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, officials from the state highways department, and activists involved in the Vaigai river restoration initiative. Their involvement indicates a multi-faceted approach to the city's development, addressing governance, infrastructure, and environmental revival.
The MDU Raising seminar represents a concerted effort by trade and business bodies to actively engage with civic planning. By bringing together officials, experts, and activists, it seeks to create a unified push for actionable strategies that will propel Madurai towards a more prosperous and sustainable future.
