Spiti Seabuckthorn, Kinnauri Apple Get GI Tag in Himachal

The Himachal Council for Science Technology and Environment (HIMCOSTE) has secured Geographical Indication (GI) registration for eight traditional products from Himachal Pradesh, bringing the state's total number of GI-tagged items to 17. The newly registered products include Seabuckthorn (Chharma) of Spiti, Salooni Safed Makka, Chamba Metal Art, Sirmauri Loiya, Kinnauri Topi, Sepuvadi of Mandi, Kinnauri apple, and Kinnauri jewellery.

Significance of GI Tags for Himachal Products

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated the people of the state on this achievement, emphasizing that GI recognition safeguards the authenticity of these products and enhances their market value. According to the Chief Minister, "This recognition will help to preserve our invaluable cultural heritage while opening new avenues for economic growth, rural entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihood." The tags are expected to create new livelihood opportunities and strengthen the rural economy.

Earlier GI-Tagged Products from Himachal

Prior to this, nine products from Himachal Pradesh had already received GI registration. These include Kullu Shawl, Kangra tea, Chamba Rumal, Kinnauri shawl, Kangra painting, Himachali Kalazeera, Himachali Chulli oil, Chamba chappal, and Lahauli Knitted socks and gloves. The addition of eight new products doubles the state's GI portfolio.

Efforts for More GI Registrations

HIMCOSTE is actively working to obtain GI tags for four additional indigenous products: Bhot Jau (barley from the Pangi region of Chamba), Chamba Chukh, Plectranthus honey (from Bharmour region of Chamba), and Sirmaur Ginger. These efforts aim to further protect and promote the unique agricultural and cultural heritage of the state.

Cultural and Economic Impact

The newly registered products represent the rich heritage, traditional knowledge, craftsmanship, and agricultural excellence of different regions of Himachal Pradesh. The GI tag not only protects the unique identity of these products but also ensures that producers can command premium prices in domestic and international markets. This is expected to boost rural entrepreneurship and provide sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
