Tragedy Strikes Gurgaon Family After CBSE Results Declaration
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Gurgaon on Wednesday evening when a Class X student died by suicide at his residence in Pataudi shortly after checking his Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examination results. The deceased, identified as Kunal, was a resident of Baba Hardev Colony in Jatauli village and studied at a local senior secondary school.
Distress Over Examination Marks
According to police officials and family members, the tragic incident occurred just hours after the CBSE results were declared. Kunal's family informed authorities that the teenager had become deeply distressed upon seeing his marks, which were significantly lower than his expectations and personal academic goals.
"The family had told him that he could reappear if he felt he had scored less. But he was very disappointed. The family is now shattered," a relative of the deceased revealed during police inquiries.
Discovery of the Tragedy
Family members recounted that after checking his results, Kunal retreated to a room on the terrace of his house. When relatives began searching for him, they discovered the terrace room was locked from the inside. Despite repeated knocking, they received no response from within.
"They knocked repeatedly but received no response. Suspecting something was wrong, his father looked through a small window in the room and saw the boy hanging," a police officer involved in the investigation stated.
Father's Desperate Attempt and Aftermath
In a desperate attempt to save his son, Kunal's father managed to enter the room through the small window, sustaining injuries in the process. The family immediately rushed the teenager to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday, after which the body was handed over to the grieving family for last rites.
Family's Heartbreaking Revelation
In a poignant detail that underscores the family's support, a relative disclosed that Kunal's father, who works as a supervisor in the food department of Indian Railways, had already booked a laptop for his son as a reward for successfully clearing the examination.
No suicide note was recovered from the scene, and police officials confirmed that further proceedings are being carried out according to established protocol.
Separate Self-Immolation Incident in Sector 40
In an unrelated but equally distressing incident, a 24-year-old man attempted self-immolation near a college opposite the Sector 40 police station on Wednesday night. The injured individual, a native of Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, had doused himself with petrol before setting himself on fire.
Severe Injuries and Ongoing Investigation
Although bystanders and authorities quickly extinguished the flames, the man had already sustained approximately 60% burn injuries. He is currently undergoing intensive treatment at a government hospital, where his condition remains serious.
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that the man was involved in a live-in relationship with a woman and had been experiencing ongoing arguments with her for several days prior to the incident. The individual, who worked as a taxi driver, resided in Sector 31 of Gurgaon.
"We will record the youth's statement after the hospital gives a fitness clearance," a police officer stated, adding that the man had not visited the police station or sought any official assistance before attempting self-immolation.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
These back-to-back incidents have highlighted serious concerns about mental health support systems and crisis intervention mechanisms in urban areas. The CBSE results-related suicide underscores the immense academic pressure faced by students, while the self-immolation attempt points to relationship-related distress among young adults.
Mental health professionals emphasize the importance of accessible counseling services and community support networks, particularly during high-stress periods like examination result declarations. Both cases remain under active police investigation as authorities work to understand the complete circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
