In a significant development, Barkatullah University, one of Madhya Pradesh’s oldest and most prominent institutions, is set to be renamed Vagdevi University. The varsity’s executive council on Wednesday approved the name-change proposal, and the decision has now been forwarded to the Governor for final assent.
Established in the early 1970s, Barkatullah University has long been a centre for postgraduate and research studies not just in the state but across central India. The name-change proposal, approved at the executive council meeting, aims to reflect a renewed institutional identity, officials said.
University officials confirmed that administrative formalities were in process and the file, in this regard, has already been sent to Lok Bhavan for consideration. Should the Governor grant approval, the university will undertake legal and administrative steps to implement the new nomenclature across certificates, signage, and official communications. Students and faculty will be notified of timelines and transitional procedures, the administration added.
Local education authorities said they will monitor the transition to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing academic activities. The renaming is expected to bring a fresh identity to the institution while maintaining its academic legacy.
