Kolhapur: Dr Rajanish Kamat was officially appointed as the vice-chancellor of Shivaji University in Kolhapur on Thursday. He becomes the 14th vice-chancellor in the university's history. His term will last for five years or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever occurs first.
Background and Education
A native of Kagal in Kolhapur district, Dr Kamat holds an MSc in Electronics from Shivaji University and a PhD from Goa University. He has also completed advanced technical training at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and IIT Kanpur.

Speaking about his appointment, Dr Kamat described it as an "unforgettable moment" to lead the institution that shaped his life. He emphasized his priorities, which include strengthening research, introducing new academic courses, and improving placement opportunities. His ultimate goal is to elevate the university's national and global standing.
Professional Experience
With over 28 years of experience in teaching, research, and administration, Dr Kamat has made significant contributions to higher education. He has worked at Shivaji University, Goa University, Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University, and Homi Bhabha State University in Mumbai.
Research Portfolio
Dr Kamat has an impressive research record, holding 11 granted patents, 13 published patents, and 43 patent applications. His innovations include a biomaterial-based brain-inspired computing device, a smart light-harvesting system, a pesticide detection mechanism, a healthcare big data tool, and a hands-free smart voice assistant. One of his designs has also secured a patent in the United Kingdom.
Background of the Position
The position of vice-chancellor at Shivaji University had been vacant since October 7, 2025, following the completion of Dr Digambar Shirke's tenure. During the interim period, Dr Suresh Gosavi, vice-chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, was given additional charge.
