IIT-B MTech Graduate Gets Rs 1.5 Crore Job; 316 Pass Out

An MTech graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has secured a Rs 1.5 crore annual salary package, as the institute awarded degrees to 316 students during its convocation ceremony. Among the graduates, 14 received PhDs, including Dr Vikas V, a practicing neurosurgeon who earned a doctorate in computer science.

Placement Highlights and Top Offers

The Rs 1.5 crore package is one of the highest offered during the placement season. IIT-B's placement cell reported that the average salary for MTech graduates this year stood at Rs 25 lakh per annum, with several students receiving international offers. The institute did not disclose the name of the company that made the top offer.

According to an IIT-B official, the placement drive saw participation from over 200 companies, including tech giants, finance firms, and research organizations. The highest domestic package was Rs 1.2 crore, while the Rs 1.5 crore offer came from a global firm based in the United States.

Dr Vikas V: From Neurosurgery to Computer Science PhD

Dr Vikas V, a neurosurgeon with over a decade of clinical experience, successfully defended his PhD thesis in computer science. His research focused on applying machine learning algorithms to improve brain tumor detection. “I wanted to bridge the gap between medicine and technology,” he said. “The PhD allowed me to develop AI tools that can assist surgeons in real-time decision-making.”

Dr Vikas completed his MBBS and MS in neurosurgery before joining IIT-B’s interdisciplinary program. He plans to continue his clinical practice while collaborating with tech companies on AI-driven medical devices.

Overall Convocation Statistics

IIT-B awarded a total of 316 degrees: 250 MTech, 14 PhD, and 52 dual-degree (BTech+MTech). The convocation was held on July 5, 2026, with Chief Guest Dr K. Radhakrishnan, former ISRO chairman, addressing the graduates. The institute also honored three alumni with Distinguished Alumnus Awards for their contributions to science and industry.

The placement season reported a 95% placement rate for MTech students, with the median salary at Rs 18 lakh per annum. Over 30 students turned down offers to pursue entrepreneurship or higher studies abroad.
