IIT Delhi Partners with 18 NITs to Boost Research and Student Mobility
IIT Delhi Signs MoUs with 18 NITs for Academic Collaboration

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 18 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), creating a nationwide academic partnership aimed at strengthening research, student mobility, and faculty collaboration across India's technical education system.

Launch and Vision

The collaboration was formally launched at IIT Delhi on June 4, 2026. The initiative seeks to build stronger links between premier engineering institutions and expand opportunities for students pursuing higher studies and research. The framework has been designed in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Senior officials, including Saumya Gupta, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Education, Government of India, participated in the launch event virtually. Directors of the partner NITs and senior faculty members from IIT Delhi were also present.

18 NITs Join the Partnership Network

The institutions covered under the agreement include NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, NIT Calicut, NIT Rourkela, VNIT Nagpur, MNIT Jaipur, MNNIT Allahabad, MANIT Bhopal, SVNIT Surat, NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Silchar, NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Raipur, NIT Srinagar, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Sikkim, and NIT Jalandhar. The partnership will focus on academic exchange, collaborative research, faculty interaction, and talent development programmes.

High-Performing Students to Get Direct Entry Route

A major feature of the collaboration is the Early Admission Scheme introduced by IIT Delhi. Under this scheme, outstanding students from partner NITs will be able to apply for MTech, MS (Research), and PhD programmes at IIT Delhi without qualifying through GATE or other national-level entrance examinations. Admission will be based on specified academic performance and research achievements.

The move is expected to create a faster pathway for meritorious students seeking advanced education and research opportunities.

Final-Year NIT Students Can Study at IIT Delhi

The framework also allows eligible undergraduate students from participating NITs to spend their final year at IIT Delhi as Special Exchange Students. These students will have access to advanced courses and research projects under the supervision of IIT Delhi faculty members. The arrangement is expected to provide greater academic exposure and research experience before graduation.

Credit Transfer System to Reduce Academic Barriers

The partnership introduces provisions for credit transfer, credit sharing, and advanced standing. Students will be able to complete part of their academic requirements at IIT Delhi while earning credits recognised by both institutions. This flexibility could help students progress more efficiently through higher education programmes and strengthen academic collaboration between institutions.

IIT Delhi Launches ALIGN Initiative

To implement the partnership framework, IIT Delhi has launched ALIGN — Academic Linkages for Innovation and National Growth. The initiative consists of three key components.

Predoctoral Fellowship Scheme

The fellowship programme is aimed at students who plan to pursue doctoral studies at IIT Delhi and want to strengthen their research preparation.

Research Seed Grant Scheme

The scheme will support joint research projects and faculty exchanges between IIT Delhi and partner NITs, encouraging collaborative innovation.

Research Immersion Visit Scheme

Under this programme, IIT Delhi faculty teams will visit partner institutions to identify research opportunities and build long-term academic collaborations.

Push for a More Connected Higher Education System

The IIT Delhi-NIT partnership represents a broader effort to create stronger academic networks across India's higher education sector. By bringing together some of the country's leading engineering institutions, the initiative seeks to improve research capacity, expand learning opportunities, and create smoother pathways for students moving into advanced studies.

Speaking on the initiative, IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee said the partnership reflects the vision of NEP 2020 and will help build a more interconnected and globally competitive higher education system.
