Delhi CM Approves Major Funding for New University Campus
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has cleared a budget of Rs 1,668 crore for the construction of a new campus of BR Ambedkar University in North Delhi's Alipur area. The decision, announced on June 24, 2026, is part of the state government's efforts to expand higher education infrastructure, particularly for students from economically weaker sections. The new campus is expected to accommodate over 10,000 students and will feature modern academic buildings, hostels, and research facilities.
Details of the Project
The Rs 1,668 crore allocation covers land acquisition, construction, and equipment for the 50-acre campus. According to a government spokesperson, the project will be completed in three phases over five years. The first phase, costing Rs 600 crore, will include academic blocks and a library, slated for completion by 2028. The campus will focus on undergraduate and postgraduate programs in social sciences, humanities, and law, aligning with the university's mission to promote inclusive education.
Impact on Higher Education Access
CM Rekha Gupta stated, "This investment underscores our commitment to making quality education accessible to every child in Delhi, especially those from marginalized communities." The new campus is expected to create 2,000 direct jobs during construction and 500 permanent faculty and staff positions. Local leaders have welcomed the move, noting that Alipur, a semi-urban area, lacks major educational institutions, forcing students to travel long distances.
Government's Vision for Education
The Delhi government has prioritized education infrastructure, with a 15% increase in the education budget this fiscal year. The BR Ambedkar University expansion is part of a larger plan to establish three new universities in the city by 2030. Officials believe the campus will also boost local economic development, with ancillary services like transportation, housing, and retail expected to grow.
Reactions and Next Steps
Opposition parties have criticized the project's cost, demanding transparency in fund utilization. However, the government has assured that a monitoring committee will oversee the project. The Delhi Urban Development Authority has been tasked with acquiring the land, and construction is expected to begin by September 2026. The university administration will launch a recruitment drive for faculty and staff in the coming months.
