Assam CM Launches Major Education Infrastructure Push in Guwahati

In a significant development for Assam's education sector, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated 67 newly constructed school buildings and laid the foundation stones for 61 additional schools on Monday. The comprehensive initiative represents a total investment of Rs 760 crore, aimed at transforming the state's educational landscape.

A Historic and Transformative Day for Assam

Describing the occasion as "historic and transformative," CM Sarma emphasized that this massive infrastructure project marks a complete overhaul of Assam's school facilities. He highlighted the government's shift from fragmented funding methods to a structured, systematic approach for building educational institutions across the state.

From Unplanned Campuses to Structured Development

Sarma pointed out that previously, schools in Assam were often constructed through donations or small allocations from MLAs' and MPs' local area development funds. This piecemeal approach resulted in unplanned and aesthetically unappealing campuses that lacked proper infrastructure and facilities.

Since 2021, the state government has implemented a coordinated strategy for educational infrastructure development. This new approach has already led to the construction of 1,318 new schools and the renovation of 58 existing institutions across Assam, demonstrating a sustained commitment to improving learning environments.

Funding Breakdown and Project Details

The inaugurated school buildings involved an expenditure of Rs 483 crore for new constructions. The funding was distributed across multiple central government schemes:

  • 18 schools were built under the PM-DevINE (Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North East) scheme
  • 21 schools were constructed through the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme
  • 28 schools received funding from the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund

For the 61 new schools where foundation stones were laid, each project is estimated to cost Rs 4.55 crore, reflecting the government's commitment to quality infrastructure with proper planning and adequate resources.

Comprehensive Educational Transformation

This initiative represents more than just building construction—it signifies Assam's commitment to creating modern, well-equipped learning spaces that can enhance educational outcomes. By moving away from ad-hoc development to systematic infrastructure planning, the state aims to provide students with environments conducive to academic excellence and holistic development.

The substantial investment in school infrastructure underscores the government's recognition of education as a foundational pillar for Assam's future growth and development, particularly in the northeastern region where educational facilities have historically needed significant improvement.
