Assam Student Suffers Fractured Nose in Hostel Assault at Tribal University
A student from Assam faced a brutal assault inside his hostel room at the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Madhya Pradesh's Anuppur district. The incident occurred in the early hours of January 13. University authorities expelled five students after learning about the attack. Police also registered a formal case against the accused individuals.
Early Morning Attack Leaves Student Traumatized
The assault happened around 4 am at the GGBH hostel on campus. Heros Jyotidas, an MA Economics student hailing from Assam, reported the terrifying event. He stated that five to six young men entered his room without warning. They first demanded his name and his home state. Then they launched a violent physical attack on him.
According to the official complaint, two of the attackers held Jyotidas's hands firmly. The others proceeded to punch and kick him repeatedly in the face. The assault caused severe injuries, including a fractured nose. The student also sustained damage to his eyes and ears during the beating.
Jyotidas recounted that the assailants issued a chilling threat during the attack. They told him, "You've come here, you'll die here." The student expressed deep trauma and fear for his safety following the incident. The mental distress left him unable to appear for his scheduled examinations starting January 16.
Student Protests Force University Action
Angry students surrounded the university's administrative building the next day. They demanded immediate and strong action against the perpetrators. The protest created significant pressure on the university administration.
Late on Wednesday night, the university took decisive steps. Authorities examined available CCTV footage from the hostel area. Based on this visual evidence, they expelled five students connected to the assault. Police formally registered a case against these individuals on Thursday.
The expelled students have been identified as Anurag Pandey, Jatin Singh, Rajneesh Tiwari, Vishal Yadav, and Utkarsh Singh. The CCTV investigation occurred on the specific recommendation of the chief hostel warden.
University and Police Respond to the Crisis
University officials stated they took strict action due to the serious nature of the incident. They explained that the CCTV footage could not be released to the public. The matter has been forwarded to the disciplinary committee for further legal proceedings.
Officials provided additional details about the victim's condition. The fractured nose affected his eye, causing further medical complications. His mental state remains unstable, according to university sources. Authorities confirmed he will not participate in the exams beginning January 16. However, they have agreed to allow him to appear for examinations on a special later date.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad submitted a formal memorandum to the superintendent of police. The student organization demanded stringent punishment for the accused individuals.
Political Figures Condemn the Violent Assault
The incident sparked strong political reactions across Madhya Pradesh. State Congress president Jitu Patwari described the assault as "extremely unfortunate." He emphasized that this was not merely an attack on a single student. Patwari stated it represented an attack on social harmony itself. He called for strict measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
