Bengaluru Couple Donates Microvan to Sullia School After Reading TOI Story
Bengaluru Couple Donates Van to Sullia School

In a heartwarming display of generosity, a Bengaluru couple in their seventies has transformed a moment of inspiration into tangible support for a rural school in Karnataka. Rajiv Talwar and his wife Chitra, moved by a year-old Times of India article, have donated a brand new four-row microvan to the government school in Kolchar, Sullia.

A Story That Sparked Action

The couple stumbled upon a TOI report from September 2024 that highlighted the daily struggles of teacher Jalajakshi KD. The article detailed how she drove a cramped minivan every day to ferry her students, covering nearly 10 kilometers up to the Kerala border. This narrative of dedication amidst adversity deeply resonated with the Talwars, who decided they had to help.

From Inspiration to Implementation

Rajiv Talwar, an engineer from IIT Delhi with an MBA from IIM Calcutta, managed to contact the school just last week through the village accountant. "I was deeply moved by the work the teacher was doing," Rajiv told TOI. "The teacher said they needed a school van and some basic infrastructure."

Together with friends, the couple decided to allocate approximately Rs 10 lakh for the Kolchar school project. This funding will cover not only the new vehicle but also basic facilities for the LKG and UKG sections. Rajiv revealed they were already supporting a school in Gujarat and now look forward to helping more such institutions in the future.

Professional Background of Generous Donors

Rajiv Talwar brings a distinguished professional background to his philanthropic efforts. After working five years in a technology company, he co-founded his own firm with other professionals before retiring in 2022. Between 2001 and 2010, he privately taught Mathematics to over 1,000 high-school students from the United States.

Chitra Talwar, also holding an MBA degree, spent approximately three decades working with large multinational corporations. Their combined experience and resources have now been channeled toward educational support in rural Karnataka.

School's Transportation Challenges

Teacher Jalajakshi KD expressed both surprise and gratitude for the unexpected support. "Though the TOI report was published in September 2024, I was surprised that Rajiv came across it now and reached out to us," she said. The school had been trying to find sponsors for a proper school bus for an entire year.

The transportation situation at the 116-student school was particularly challenging. "The school currently runs four trips daily, with two trips one way," Jalajakshi explained. "In one trip, I drive the vehicle, and in the second trip, either the SDMC president, a teacher, or a parent drives, as the route extends up to the Kerala border."

She emphasized the difficulties with their existing minivan: "We found it difficult to manage with the existing minivan as it was congested." The new microvan, expected to arrive within a week, will significantly ease these daily struggles.

Beyond Transportation: Comprehensive Support

What made this donation particularly meaningful was Rajiv's willingness to check whether the school needed anything beyond transportation. "Rajiv's willingness to check whether the school needed anything else was an unexpected encouragement," Jalajakshi noted.

The teacher shared her educational vision: "It is my dream that the LKG and UKG classes of our school should be on a par with private schools in terms of classroom infrastructure, learning materials, and educational aids. I am happy that Rajiv agreed to support us."

Historic Donation for Sullia

This contribution marks a significant milestone for government schools in the region. Jalajakshi confirmed: "This is the first time a government school in Sullia is getting a new microvan." The donation represents not just improved transportation but also enhanced educational opportunities for young learners.

The Talwars' initiative demonstrates how media stories can bridge urban and rural communities, connecting those with resources to those with pressing needs. Their action serves as an inspiring example of how retired professionals can continue making substantial contributions to society through targeted philanthropy.
