CBSE Announces Digital On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Exams from 2026
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled a major shift in its evaluation methodology, declaring that it will introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for assessing Class 12 answer books beginning with the 2026 board examinations. This strategic move is designed to significantly improve the accuracy, efficiency, and transparency of the assessment process across its vast network.
Transition to Digital Evaluation for Enhanced Assessment
CBSE, which conducts Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations annually in India and across 26 countries, catering to nearly 46 lakh students, will now transition Class 12 answer sheets to a fully digital evaluation system from 2026. In contrast, Class 10 answer books will continue to be assessed in physical mode for the time being, as per the official notification dated February 9, 2026.
Under the new On-Screen Marking framework, Class 12 answer books will be scanned and evaluated digitally by examiners. Teachers will mark scripts directly on computer screens, eliminating the need to handle physical copies. The Board emphasized that this digital approach will eradicate totalling errors and minimize manual intervention, thereby streamlining the entire evaluation workflow.

According to the Board, this new system will not only make the evaluation process more streamlined and transparent but also eliminate the need for mark verification after results are declared, further reducing administrative burdens.
Infrastructure and Technical Readiness Requirements
To ensure the smooth implementation of On-Screen Marking, CBSE has directed all affiliated schools to prepare the necessary technical infrastructure well in advance. Schools must ensure compliance with the following requirements:
- A computer lab equipped with a Public Static IP as per Affiliation Bye-Laws
- PCs or laptops running Windows 8 or above operating systems
- Minimum 4 GB RAM and 1 GB free space on the C drive
- Updated internet browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer, or Firefox
- Adobe Reader installed for document handling
- Reliable internet connectivity with a minimum speed of 2 Mbps
- Uninterrupted power supply to support continuous evaluation
The Board has urged schools to complete these preparations promptly to facilitate a seamless transition to the digital evaluation system.
Training and Support Initiatives for Stakeholders
CBSE is committed to supporting teachers and schools through this transition by implementing several training and support measures. All teachers with OASIS IDs will be granted access to log in and familiarize themselves with the On-Screen Marking platform prior to its full-scale deployment.
The Board will conduct multiple dry runs and organize comprehensive training programs to explain the system's functionalities and best practices. Additionally, a dedicated call centre will be established to resolve technical issues and provide assistance, while instructional videos will be released to enhance understanding and proficiency among evaluators.
CBSE has assured that detailed instructions for each activity related to the On-Screen Marking system will be issued separately to ensure timely and effective action by all stakeholders, including students, teachers, and school administrators.
