Delhi University Campus Erupts in Violence as Student Groups Clash

A violent confrontation between rival student factions at the Arts Faculty of Delhi University on Friday has sparked serious allegations of assault and misconduct, with both sides leveling accusations of intimidation and physical violence. The incident, which occurred around 2 pm, has drawn attention to campus security and political tensions among student organizations.

ABVP Alleges Attack on Journalist

In an official statement, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) claimed that a woman journalist associated with a YouTube channel was attacked while covering a protest on the university campus. ABVP Delhi state secretary Sarthak Sharma asserted that left-wing student activists physically manhandled the journalist after she questioned protesters about their activities.

Sharma further alleged that several individuals involved in the incident were not legitimate students of Delhi University, raising concerns about outside elements infiltrating campus protests. The ABVP has demanded immediate and strict action from both police authorities and the university administration to address what they describe as a serious breach of campus security.

AISA Counters with Assault Allegations

Meanwhile, the All India Students' Association (AISA) presented a dramatically different account of events, accusing right-wing students of attacking its members during a protest demanding the implementation of new University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. According to AISA's statement, their Delhi University secretary Anjali was physically assaulted while attempting to shield a journalist from being heckled by opposing groups.

The student organization expressed particular concern about security lapses, noting that despite the presence of security personnel on campus, the attackers were allegedly allowed to act without intervention. AISA further claimed that when students later visited a police station to file a formal complaint, a large crowd gathered outside the station issuing threats, while police officers reportedly failed to intervene in the situation.

Police Investigation Underway

Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that the matter is currently under investigation. A senior police officer stated that a scuffle broke out between two groups of students during the afternoon hours, and that one student subsequently approached the police station alleging assault by another student linked to AISA.

"We have conducted her medical legal case examination, and a formal complaint has been received," the officer explained. "Appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of our ongoing enquiry into the incident."

The clash at Delhi University highlights the ongoing political tensions between student organizations on Indian campuses and raises questions about campus security protocols during protests. Both ABVP and AISA have called for accountability and justice, while university officials and police continue their investigations into the violent altercation that has left the campus community concerned about future demonstrations.
