Himachal Education Minister Directs Repurposing of Vacant School Buildings

In a significant move to optimize educational infrastructure, Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur has issued directives for the repurposing of buildings left vacant following school mergers across the state. The minister emphasized that these facilities should be adapted to meet local community needs, suggesting potential uses such as digital learning centres, pre-primary sections, Mahila Mandals, skill labs, sports facilities, or community resource centres.

Removing Administrative Barriers for Enhanced Resource Sharing

Chairing a comprehensive review meeting with deputy directors of school education, Minister Thakur stressed the urgent need to eliminate administrative barriers between primary and secondary schools. This initiative aims to facilitate the shared utilization of critical resources, including laboratories, libraries, playgrounds, and teaching staff, thereby improving educational efficiency and access.

The cabinet minister underscored the accountability of education officials for the effective implementation of policies and achieving measurable improvements in learning outcomes. He mandated strict, time-bound utilization of funds under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, with all expenditures required to be completed by March 31, and called for intensified field monitoring to ensure compliance.

Review of Stream Rationalization and Faculty Deployment

During the meeting, Minister Thakur also reviewed the rationalization of science and commerce streams in 1,970 government senior secondary schools. Currently, science streams are active in 818 schools, while commerce is offered in 799 institutions. He instructed officials to ensure optimal faculty deployment while maintaining equitable access to quality education for all students.

In a move to enhance examination integrity, the minister announced that merged school buildings will serve as Board exam centres under the direct supervision of principals. All examination halls will be equipped with CCTV cameras, with special attention given to previously identified black spots to prevent malpractices.

Addressing Administrative and Health Concerns

Minister Thakur raised concerns over delays by private schools in issuing school leaving certificates, directing timely resolution of such issues to avoid inconveniences for students. He further reviewed various administrative aspects, including inspection reports, mid-day meal monitoring, student health programmes, and the digital tracking of teacher attendance to strengthen accountability across the education system.

This comprehensive review underscores the state government's commitment to transforming educational infrastructure and processes, ensuring that resources are utilized effectively to benefit students and communities alike.
