JEE Main 2026: Engineering Physics at IIT Tirupati Records Sharpest Surge in Student Interest
According to the latest JEE Main 2026 results, IIT Tirupati has witnessed a significant uptick in student preferences across its undergraduate engineering programmes. The data, sourced from the Joint Implementation Committee Report, highlights a robust year-on-year growth in choice counts for the 2025 academic session.
Engineering Physics Leads with Highest Percentage Increase
Among all programmes, Engineering Physics emerged as the fastest-growing branch in percentage terms. The choice count for this programme jumped from 5,957 in 2024 to 7,594 in 2025, marking an impressive increase of nearly 27.5%. This surge underscores a rising interest in specialised engineering fields at the institute.
Computer Science and Engineering Dominates in Absolute Numbers
Computer Science and Engineering continued to be the most preferred branch at IIT Tirupati, maintaining its dominance in absolute numbers. The choice count for CSE rose from 14,048 in 2024 to 17,117 in 2025, reflecting a solid 21.8% increase. This trend aligns with the high demand for tech-related disciplines in the current job market.
Core Engineering Branches Show Consistent Growth
Other core engineering programmes also posted notable growth. Mechanical Engineering saw its choice count increase from 10,141 to 12,243, a rise of over 20.7%. Civil Engineering registered a 20.5% increase, with choices moving from 8,622 to 10,387. Chemical Engineering followed a similar trajectory, recording a 20.3% growth from 8,207 to 9,873 choices in 2025.
Electrical Engineering, a newly introduced programme, also garnered significant interest, with a choice count of 13,420 in 2025, indicating strong student appeal for this branch.
Placement Performance Strengthens Institute's Appeal
The improvement in choice counts coincides with a stronger placement performance at IIT Tirupati. During the 2024 placement season, the institute recorded a clear recovery in overall outcomes, with the BTech placement rate rising to 83.82%.
Specifically, Computer Science and Engineering posted a placement rate of over 91%, while Electrical Engineering followed closely with placements nearing 89%. These high placement rates likely contribute to the increased student interest, as candidates seek programmes with strong career prospects.
Background on IIT Tirupati
Established in 2015 as part of the third generation of IITs announced in 2014, IIT Tirupati is an Institute of National Importance under an Act of Parliament. The institute began its general functioning under the mentorship of IIT Madras in the academic year 2015-16.
IIT Tirupati offers six BTech programmes: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, and Mechanical Engineering.
