Enrolment Decline Continues
Karnataka's school enrolment has dropped by 66,037 students in the 2025-26 academic year compared to 2024-25, according to data released by the state education department. This marks the second consecutive year of decline, following a sharper fall of 1,46,052 enrolments in 2024-25 relative to 2023-24.
Trend Over Two Years
The cumulative decrease over the two-year period amounts to over 212,000 students. Officials attribute the trend to multiple factors including declining birth rates, migration, and increased enrollment in private schools not captured in the data. However, specific reasons for the accelerated drop in 2024-25 remain under review.
Impact on Schools and Resources
The falling numbers have raised concerns among educators and policymakers about potential school closures, teacher redeployment, and underutilized infrastructure. Rural areas have been particularly affected, with many government schools reporting empty seats.
According to a senior education department official, "The decline is a cause for concern and we are analyzing district-wise data to identify hotspots and plan interventions." The department is considering measures such as merging low-enrollment schools and improving facilities to attract students.
Comparison with Previous Years
In 2023-24, total enrolment stood at approximately 1.2 crore students across government and aided schools. The 2025-26 figures are expected to be released in full by September. The trend mirrors national patterns, where school enrolment has been declining in several states due to demographic shifts.
