Mangaluru KV-2 Wins Sterling Green School Award

Mangaluru's Kendriya Vidyalaya No 2 Earns Prestigious Sterling School Award for Environmental Leadership

In a significant achievement for Karnataka's educational sector, Kendriya Vidyalaya No 2 in Yekkur, Mangaluru has brought national recognition to the state by securing the coveted Sterling School Award under the Green Schools Programme administered by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). This distinguished honor highlights the institution's unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

Rigorous Audit and Consistent Environmental Commitment

The award followed a comprehensive Green School audit that evaluated various environmental parameters. What makes this recognition particularly noteworthy is that KV-2 Mangaluru has maintained its Green School status for five consecutive years, demonstrating consistent excellence in ecological initiatives. For the 2025–26 period, only two educational institutions from Karnataka received this prestigious distinction, with KV-2 being the sole representative from the public sector, alongside a private school from Bengaluru.

National Recognition Among Thousands of Participants

School Principal Jaswinderlal revealed the national significance of this achievement, stating that "only two Kendriya Vidyalayas across India received this honor" for the current year. The other recipient is Kendriya Vidyalaya in Narela, West Delhi. He further explained that approximately 2,000 schools from across the country participate in the comprehensive programme, which features multiple categories, with the Green School designation being among the most competitive. "We were specifically selected for the Sterling School award under this programme," he emphasized.

Comprehensive Environmental Initiatives and Best Practices

Under the guidance of Green School coordinator Sujatha U Nair, the school's dedicated green team has implemented numerous environmental best practices, including:

  • Advanced waste management systems
  • Effective composting techniques
  • Rainwater harvesting infrastructure
  • Regular cleanliness drives
  • Comprehensive energy conservation measures

The principal detailed that the institution conducts various environmental activities throughout the academic year and consistently strives to meet all assessment parameters to qualify for the award annually. Beyond waste management and maintaining exceptional cleanliness standards, the school campus features a productive kitchen garden that contributes to its sustainable ecosystem.

Reinforcing Environmental Responsibility and Future Goals

"This recognition reinforces our commitment to promoting environmental responsibility among students and staff," Principal Jaswinderlal stated. "It serves as powerful motivation for our school community to continue embracing sustainable practices and working toward a greener future." The award ceremony took place in New Delhi, where Sunita Narain, Director General of CSE, personally presented the Sterling School Award during a formal event, acknowledging the institution's exemplary environmental leadership and educational impact.
