Tragic Drowning Claims Life of Pune Engineering Student at Lotus Point Waterfall
A 21-year-old engineering student from Pune tragically drowned on Tuesday at the popular Lotus Point waterfall located in Ekole village, Maval taluka. The incident occurred approximately 70 kilometers from Pune city, casting a shadow over what was meant to be a recreational outing.
Victim Identified as Ayush Harinkhede
The victim has been identified as Ayush Harinkhede, a resident of Katraj in Pune who originally hailed from Gondia district. Harinkhede was a student at an engineering college in the city, adding to the sorrow of the academic community.
Details of the Fatal Outing
According to reports, Harinkhede visited the scenic Lotus Point waterfall in the morning along with five friends. The location is renowned among trekkers and revellers for its natural beauty. Despite not knowing how to swim, Harinkhede entered the water, leading to a sudden loss of breath and subsequent drowning. His friends witnessed the harrowing event unfold.
Rescue Efforts and Challenges
Upon receiving information about the incident, authorities immediately alerted rescue teams. Multiple teams, including those from Mulshi, Wadgaon Maval, Lonavla, Wanyajeev Rakshak Maval, Shivdurga Mitra Lonavla, and Mulshi disaster management, rushed to the spot around 4 pm. The difficult terrain posed significant challenges for the rescue operation.
Nilesh Garade of Wanyajeev Rakshak, Maval, highlighted the complexities involved. "It was not easy to bring the body out of the spot due to the difficult terrain," Garade stated. The body was traced around 5:30 pm, but it took until approximately 9 pm to extricate it and hand it over to the police.
Police Investigation and Aftermath
The Paud police have registered a case of accidental death in connection with the incident. The body was formally handed over to the authorities for further procedures. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with water bodies, especially for non-swimmers.
Lotus Point waterfall, while a popular destination for outings, has now become the site of a somber incident that has left the local community in mourning. Safety precautions and awareness are being emphasized in the wake of this unfortunate drowning.
