In an official circular issued on January 26, 2026, Secretary Sonali Giri, IAS, confirmed that the holiday applies to all government, aided, recognised, and private schools operating in Punjab. The circular emphasised that strict compliance with the order must be ensured by school authorities, with copies forwarded to relevant officials and institutions for immediate action.

Chandigarh Schools Also Closed

Similarly, the Union Territory Administration of Chandigarh has announced that all government and private schools in the city will remain closed today, Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The announcement was made on Monday, January 26, following Republic Day celebrations held at the Parade Ground. Officials confirmed that the closure applies to all schools across Chandigarh, allowing students and staff to fully participate in the national festivities.

Assam Declares Holiday for Bathou Puja

In Assam, the General Administration Department has declared a state-wide holiday today, January 27, 2026, to mark Gwthar Bathou San, also known as Bhathow Puja. This significant cultural and spiritual observance in the region reflects the state's recognition of Bathou Puja, a festival deeply rooted in the traditions of the Bodo community. The festival celebrates the worship of Bathou, symbolised by the sacred Siju plant, highlighting Assam's rich cultural heritage.

Jammu and Kashmir School Reopening Schedule

Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, schools up to class 8 are scheduled to reopen on March 1, 2026, while higher classes will resume a week earlier, on February 22, 2026. This decision was taken in view of the severe winter conditions, with temperatures dipping several degrees below freezing across Kashmir, ensuring the safety and well-being of students during the cold spell.
