Telangana Announces Major Education Overhaul with AI Integration and Infrastructure Boost

In a landmark move poised to reshape the educational landscape of Telangana, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has unveiled a comprehensive plan to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the state's school curriculum, effective from the 2026-27 academic year. This initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing education and preparing students for a technology-driven future.

AI Integration and Teacher Training

During a high-level review of the education department on Thursday, the Chief Minister, who also holds the education portfolio, directed officials to implement short-term AI training programs for teachers. This training is designed to equip educators with the necessary skills to navigate the rapidly evolving technological environment and effectively deliver AI-based instruction.

Revanth Reddy emphasized the urgency of this transformation, stating that there is a critical need to elevate government schools into symbols of quality education. To support this vision, he announced that AI-based courses will be immediately introduced in polytechnics and advanced technology centres (ATCs), with outdated courses being phased out to make room for contemporary subjects.

Student Welfare and Infrastructure Development

The reforms extend beyond curriculum changes to include substantial student welfare measures. Government school students will now receive breakfast and milk, sourced from Vijaya Dairy, in addition to uniforms, shoes, socks, and stationery. This holistic approach aims to enhance student well-being and academic performance.

On the infrastructure front, the Chief Minister instructed engineers to construct schools within the core urban region economy (CURE) area, modeled after corporate schools. He set an ambitious target to complete 12 new integrated schools within a year, ensuring they are equipped with facilities comparable to prestigious institutions like Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Jubilee Hills Public School.

Expansion of Telangana Public Schools

Further expanding access to quality education, Revanth Reddy directed officials to launch Telangana Public Schools in 100 assembly constituencies, excluding Hyderabad, starting next year. These schools will be patterned after the Arutla Telangana Public School in Rangareddy district, promoting a standardized model of excellence across the state.

Policy Reforms and Funding Initiatives

The meeting also saw the presentation of two pivotal reports. The Telangana Private Schools Fee Regulatory Monitoring Commission submitted its findings, prompting the Chief Minister to order district-level inspections led by collectors and District Education Officers (DEOs). These inspections will assess fee structures, with a draft report to be made public for feedback from parents and activists before a state-level committee makes final decisions.

Simultaneously, Telangana Education Commission chairman Akunuri Murali presented a new state education policy, drawing inspiration from best practices in the United States, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Murali provided a detailed explanation of the report's aspects, with the Chief Minister offering his insights and suggestions for refinement.

To ensure effective implementation, a committee led by government advisor K Keshava Rao will finalize the legal and practical aspects of these policies for the upcoming academic year. Additionally, Revanth Reddy announced the allocation of funds to all universities in the state, noting that Rs 1,000 crore has already been earmarked for Osmania University (OU). Telangana Higher Education Council chairman Prof V Balakista Reddy has been tasked with submitting a report on the funding requirements for other universities.

Broader Educational Initiatives

In a bid to foster continuous engagement with educational topics, the Chief Minister proposed dedicating a week to such discussions during the government's 99-day program. He also provided several suggestions to representatives of the Hare Krishna Mission regarding the breakfast provision scheme, underscoring the collaborative effort involved in these reforms.

With these sweeping changes, Telangana is positioning itself at the forefront of educational innovation, blending technological advancement with robust infrastructure and student-centric policies to create a more equitable and future-ready learning environment.
