Women continue to dominate the teaching profession in Delhi's schools. Recent government data shows they now make up a striking 73% of the total teaching force.
Steady Growth in Teacher Numbers
The Department of Economics and Statistics released fresh figures for the 2024-25 academic year. The total number of teachers across all educational institutions in Delhi reached 1,61,958. This marks a small increase from 1,60,479 teachers recorded in the previous year.
Breaking down the numbers reveals a clear gender pattern. Out of the total teachers in 2024-25, only 43,400 were men. Meanwhile, women teachers numbered 1,18,558. This substantial difference highlights the overwhelming presence of women in Delhi's classrooms.
Primary Schools Show Similar Trend
At the primary school level, teacher numbers saw a marginal rise. The count went from 25,970 in 2023-24 to 26,560 in 2024-25. Female teachers maintained their majority here as well.
Middle schools experienced a growth in teacher strength too. The numbers increased from 11,276 to 11,556 during the same period. However, secondary schools recorded a slight decline. Their teacher count fell from 8,529 to 8,405.
Senior Secondary Schools Lead in Numbers
Senior secondary schools accounted for the largest share of teachers. Their numbers grew from 1,14,704 to 1,15,437. Women teachers significantly outnumbered men at this level too. This reflects a consistent gender pattern across all stages of school education in the capital.
Historical Data Confirms the Pattern
Earlier data from 2021-22 and 2022-23 shows a similar trend. Total teacher strength across educational institutions rose modestly from 1,51,600 to 1,56,038 during those years. Throughout this period, female teachers consistently formed over two-thirds of the workforce.
Student Enrolment Presents a Contrast
While teacher numbers show limited growth, student enrolment tells a different story. Data indicates high enrolment in higher educational institutions. Total student numbers stood at 15,04,593 in 2022-23. They increased to 15,46,737 in 2023-24.
Of these students in 2023-24, 7,59,194 were girls and 7,87,543 were boys. However, enrolment declined sharply in 2024-25. Total student numbers fell to 8,60,113. This included 4,18,716 girls and 4,41,396 boys.
The figures cover enrolment across universities, colleges and other higher educational institutions in Delhi. They underscore a continuing gap. Student enrolment grows at a different pace compared to the teaching workforce across educational levels in the capital.
The data clearly illustrates the feminization of the teaching profession in Delhi. Women now hold nearly three out of every four teaching positions in the city's schools. This trend appears stable across recent years despite fluctuations in student numbers.
