According to the schedule, the first semester will conclude in December, with subsequent semester classes being conducted between January and June. Siuli Sarkar, principal of Lady Brabourne College—an institution that runs ten postgraduate programmes—commented on the operational benefits, stating, "With a formal postgraduate calendar now in place, we will no longer have to depend on the variable timelines set by subject-specific boards of studies to initiate our academic practices. This structured and predictable schedule will provide immense clarity and help students plan their academic year more effectively."
Resolving Admission and Examination Disparities
Several professors highlighted critical issues that the new calendar aims to resolve. Previously, in the absence of a standardized schedule, postgraduate admissions could drag on until December, even though achieving parity with national academic standards required the first semester to be completed by that time. Furthermore, there was a complete lack of uniformity in conducting first-semester examinations, with one department potentially holding exams in March and another in April, creating administrative chaos.
A faculty member from the science department provided insight into the admission dilemma, explaining, "From an institutional perspective, we often could not refuse student admissions because filling available seats remains a crucial priority. However, allowing admissions to continue until December severely hampers the academic process. A student realistically needs at least three months of consistent classes to be adequately prepared for first-semester examinations. Protracted admissions inevitably delay the entire academic schedule."

In a related strategic decision, Calcutta University has also finalized plans to conduct its postgraduate entrance tests in the month of May.
