Indian Universities Make Strides in QS World University Rankings 2027
India's higher education sector has received a significant boost in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027, with more than half of the country's ranked institutions improving their global positions. A total of 52 Indian universities featured in the rankings, showcasing the nation's growing academic influence.
IIT-Delhi Leads the Pack
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, has climbed to 118th place globally, up from 123rd last year. This marks the highest-ever ranking achieved by an Indian institution in QS history, matching the previous best. IIT-Delhi also emerged as the top-ranked Indian institution in the latest edition.
Delhi University Continues Rise
Delhi University (DU) maintained its upward trajectory, moving to 322nd globally from 328th last year. Ranked seventh nationally, DU's progress reflects its growing academic reputation and research performance.
JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia Improve
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) improved to 555th place globally from 558th, securing the 15th position among Indian institutions. Jamia Millia Islamia was among the biggest gainers, leaping from the 761-770 band to 686th globally, highlighting its increasing international visibility. Jamia is now ranked 20th nationally.
Positive Trend for Indian Higher Education
The latest rankings signal a broader positive trend for Indian universities, which are increasingly gaining recognition for research output, academic excellence, employer reputation, and global engagement. With a record number of institutions improving their positions, India is positioning itself as a global education hub, demonstrating the growing competitiveness of its universities on the international stage.
