TISS Mumbai Announces Major Academic Expansion with New Data Science School
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai is embarking on a significant academic expansion, with plans to establish a dedicated school for data science and artificial intelligence, deeply integrated with social sciences. This initiative marks a strategic move to bridge technology and societal impact.
New School and Undergraduate Program Growth
The proposed school will be the 13th on the Mumbai campus, reflecting TISS's commitment to evolving its curriculum. Alongside this, the institute is preparing to expand its undergraduate offerings, with new programs scheduled to launch from the upcoming academic year. These developments aim to address the growing intersection of technology, policy, and society.
Announcements at the 85th Convocation
Vice Chancellor Badri Narayan Tiwari made these announcements on the sidelines of TISS's 85th convocation held on Saturday. The event celebrated the graduation of 1,080 students, including 97 research scholars who received Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Additionally, one student was awarded a Master of Philosophy degree, while 982 students earned Master's, BEd, MEd, and dual degrees.
This graduating cohort is increasingly stepping into domains where technology and social sciences converge, highlighting the relevance of TISS's new initiatives. Scholarships totaling approximately Rs 3 crore were disbursed to support students in their academic journeys.
Focus on Inclusive Progress and Viksit Bharat
Addressing the graduating batch, Thaawarchand Gehlot emphasized that the vision of Viksit Bharat can only be realized through inclusive progress. In line with this, Tiwari indicated that TISS is working towards establishing a Viksit Bharat Vichar Kendra. This center will consolidate inputs from seminars across TISS schools over a two-month period.
"A detailed compendium will be prepared and shared with the government," Tiwari stated, underscoring the institute's role in contributing to national development through research and policy recommendations.
The expansion plans and convocation achievements underscore TISS's ongoing efforts to adapt to contemporary educational needs while maintaining its foundation in social sciences.
