TNNLU Vice-Chancellor Defends Controversial Dress Code Remarks

Trichy: Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU) Vice-Chancellor V Nagaraj has defended his controversial statements suggesting that girl students wearing shorts "invite sexual harassment" and cause "distraction not only for students but also faculty." The remarks, made during an April 15 interaction with class representatives, have sparked national outrage and student protests.

VC Cites Anonymous Complaints and Campus Context

In a written statement issued to students late on Sunday evening, Nagaraj explained that his comments stemmed from certain anonymous sexual harassment complaints brought to his attention. He emphasized that the discussion originally focused on admissions and improving the university's image.

"I said that certain forms of dress may distract labourers working on campus, as well as visitors and vendors," Nagaraj stated. "The social and cultural diversity of these visitors, vendors, and stakeholders is wide, and they come from different backgrounds."

He further noted that since TNNLU is situated in a village panchayat, it is better to exercise discretion in dressing and behavior to avoid unnecessary attention or remarks from outsiders. Construction of the ladies' hostel annex is currently ongoing on campus.

Anonymous Emails and Apology Offer

Nagaraj revealed he had received anonymous emails, including one dated March 29, that addressed sexual harassment concerns. "One of the anonymous emails regarding sexual harassment indicated the bitter experiences of students, allegedly linked to their way of dressing," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor offered an apology if his statements caused offense. "If my statements have hurt the sentiments of any members of the student community, faculty, or administrative staff of TNNLU, I have no hesitation in apologising," he added.

Student Response and Ongoing Protests

However, students have criticized Nagaraj's statement as inadequate. They argue it fails to address his specific remarks about clothing causing "distraction" to faculty members.

"The statement is vague and attaches a stereotype to a particular set of people," a student commented. "It appears to be an attempt to quell our protests and put the issue to rest before the upcoming convocation. So far, the administration was bluffing everyone and it was portrayed as a misrepresentation by class representatives, but he has now accepted it."

The controversy has led to widespread student protests at TNNLU, with students across the country expressing solidarity. The incident has highlighted ongoing debates about campus safety, dress codes, and administrative accountability in educational institutions.
