Nagpur's Chess Queen Divya Deshmukh Set for Arjuna Award After Historic Wins
Divya Deshmukh Recommended for Arjuna Award

In a proud moment for Indian sports, Nagpur's chess sensation Divya Deshmukh has been recommended for the prestigious Arjuna Award, the nation's second-highest sporting honour. The 19-year-old Grandmaster, who has represented India over 40 times, is being recognised for her consistent excellence and trailblazing achievements on the global stage.

A Meteoric Rise to Chess Stardom

The sports ministry-convened committee, which met in New Delhi on Wednesday, put forward Divya's name alongside 23 other athletes. The recommendations will now go to Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for final approval, after which the awards will be presented by the President of India. The Arjuna Award is given annually to athletes who demonstrate sustained excellence at the international level over four years, showcasing determination and inspiring the nation.

Divya's journey to this honour is marked by a series of groundbreaking victories. In July, she scripted history by winning the Women's World Cup in Georgia, a triumph that also secured her the title of India's 88th Grandmaster. With this, she joined an elite club, becoming only the fourth Indian woman after Koneru Humpy, D Harika, and Vaishali Rameshbabu to achieve the Grandmaster title. She is also the 44th woman in the world to hold this distinction.

Dominance Across All Formats

The young champion's dominance is not confined to a single format. Last year, in Gujarat, she clinched the World Junior Champion title. Since that victory, she has held the World Junior No. 1 ranking across all three formats of chess: standard, rapid, and blitz. This all-round supremacy highlights her versatility and deep understanding of the game.

Her medal tally is a testament to her prowess. To date, Divya has won an impressive 24 gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals at various international tournaments. Her success continued into 2024 as a key member of the Indian team that won the Chess Olympiad. At the Olympiad, she secured a double delight by also winning the Board 3 gold medal.

An Inspiration for a New Generation

The conferment of the Arjuna Award on Divya Deshmukh is more than just personal recognition; it is a celebration of the rising power of women in Indian chess and sports. Her journey from Nagpur to the world stage embodies the spirit of the award—overcoming challenges and serving as an inspiration. As the nation awaits the formal ceremony, Divya stands as a shining example of dedication, skill, and the bright future of Indian chess.
