India's First Astronaut Rakesh Sharma to be Honored with Prestigious Science Award
Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, the pioneering Indian who made history as the nation's first space traveler, is set to receive the distinguished Vikram Sarabhai Vigyan Puraskar in a formal ceremony. The event will be held at Pragati Academy in Perumbavoor, Kochi, commencing at 11 AM on March 24. Governor Rajendra Arlekar will personally present the award to Sharma, marking a significant recognition of his lifelong dedication and service to India.

Instituted by the Vikram Sarabhai Science Foundation (VSSF) based in Kochi, this esteemed award carries substantial honors. It includes a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, along with a formal citation and a commemorative plaque. The selection committee for this year's recipient comprised eminent personalities: former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) G Madhavan Nair, former chief secretary V P Joy, Subrahmanya Iyer from Amrita Hospital in Kochi, and Indira Rajan, the CEO of VSSF. Notably, the inaugural edition of this award was previously conferred upon former ISRO chairman S Somanath, highlighting the award's prestige in the scientific community.
Rakesh Sharma's Illustrious Career and Achievements
Rakesh Sharma's journey to becoming a national icon began with his service as a pilot in the Indian Air Force. His most celebrated achievement occurred on April 2, 1984, when he embarked on a historic space mission aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11. During this groundbreaking expedition, Sharma spent eight days aboard the space station Salyut 7, conducting experiments and representing India on the global stage. Born in Patiala, Punjab, he eventually retired as a wing commander, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and excellence.
Sharma's contributions extend beyond space exploration. He demonstrated exceptional valor during the Bangladesh Liberation War, where he flew 21 combat missions in a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 fighter jet. In recognition of his distinguished service and courage, the nation honored him with the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. This latest accolade, the Vikram Sarabhai Vigyan Puraskar, further cements his status as a national hero whose achievements continue to inspire generations.
