Aamir, Hrithik Rejected 'Hum Tum' Before Saif's Casting

The Untold Casting Saga of Bollywood's Iconic Romantic Comedy 'Hum Tum'

In a fascinating revelation, director Kunal Kohli has peeled back the curtain on the challenging casting process behind the beloved 2004 romantic comedy 'Hum Tum'. Contrary to popular belief, the film's lead role of Karan Kapoor was not an easy fill, with several top Bollywood stars declining the opportunity before it ultimately landed with Saif Ali Khan.

Aamir Khan's Personal Turmoil Led to His Absence

Kunal Kohli clarified long-standing speculation about Aamir Khan's involvement in the project. "No, Aamir actually didn't hear the script, to be fair to him," the filmmaker explained. "He was going through his first divorce with Reena Dutta then. So, he wasn't in the right frame of mind." This personal circumstance during a difficult period in Aamir's life played a crucial role in his decision to pass on the film, putting to rest rumors about his potential participation.

Hrithik Roshan's Confidence Crisis Despite Loving the Script

The director also shared insights into Hrithik Roshan's consideration for the role. "Hrithik Roshan really loved the script. But he was just not ready to do it," Kohli recalled. Hrithik expressed concerns about his recent projects, stating, "I'm not sure how my character in 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' (2003) would come out or be accepted," which it wasn't. He added, "My own film, 'Mujhse Dosti Karoge!' (2002) hadn't worked with him. But he said, 'This film is pure gold! I don't have the confidence to do it right now. I'm not in that space.'" These career-related anxieties ultimately led Hrithik to decline the offer.

Vivek Oberoi's Fluctuating Interest and Final Decision

Another prominent name in the casting discussions was Vivek Oberoi, who was at the peak of his stardom following successes like 'Company' (2002) and 'Saathiya' (2002). Kunal Kohli noted, "He kept coming in and going out for various reasons. And then we zeroed in on Saif." This indicates a period of uncertainty and exploration before the production team settled on their final choice.

Saif Ali Khan's Eventual Casting and the Film's Success

After these rejections, Saif Ali Khan was cast in the lead role, alongside a stellar supporting cast including Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Rati Agnihotri, and Jimmy Sheirgill. The film, loosely inspired by 'When Harry Met Sally...', follows the evolving relationship between Karan and Rhea from friendship to love. It went on to become a box office hit and remains a cherished romantic comedy in Bollywood history.

On the work front, Saif Ali Khan is set to appear next in the upcoming project 'Haiwaan', continuing his dynamic career in the film industry.
