Aamir Khan Unveils Digital Strategy for 'Sitaare Zameen Par' on SonyLIV
In a recent interview, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan shared insights into the digital release strategy for his film 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. He confirmed that an OTT premiere was always part of the plan, though not immediately following its theatrical run. The film, directed by R S Prasanna, debuted in cinemas in June 2025 and achieved remarkable success, grossing over Rs 250 crore worldwide and earning praise for its compelling story and performances.
OTT Release Details and Aamir's Vision
Aamir Khan spoke to PTI about the timing of the digital release, stating, "I was never in two minds. I always wanted an OTT release but not so quickly after the theatre release. So it is now coming on SonyLIV on April 3 and I want audiences all across the country to enjoy the film." He emphasized that this move allows viewers who missed the theatrical experience to watch it conveniently on the streaming platform.
Interestingly, after its cinema run, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' took an unconventional approach by premiering on Aamir's YouTube channel under a pay-per-view model. This initiative aimed to enhance accessibility and explore alternative distribution methods beyond traditional OTT deals. Aamir explained his philosophy, saying, "This is my private cinema chain. Think of it like Aamir Khan Productions has opened a new cinema chain, which is in everyone’s house and in everyone’s pocket... I got good offers from OTT channels. But I don’t want those Rs 100-125 crore from OTT channels. I want to earn Rs 100 from my audience. I prefer that more," highlighting his focus on direct audience engagement.
Film Synopsis and Spiritual Successor
'Sitaare Zameen Par' serves as a spiritual successor to the 2007 classic 'Taare Zameen Par'. In this film, Aamir Khan portrays Gulshan Arora, a basketball coach whose life undergoes a dramatic transformation. After losing his job, he is assigned to train a team of neurodivergent players as part of community service, ultimately preparing them for a tournament. The narrative weaves emotion with an inspiring journey of growth and acceptance, resonating deeply with audiences.
Alongside the main feature, the documentary 'Sitaaron Ke Sitaare' will also be available on SonyLIV. Aamir described it as a special piece of content, noting, "It’s a very special piece of content because it looks at the real superstars. The ‘Sitaare’ are the superstars but the real life superstars are the parents of these 10 artists who have raised them and have taken care of them. So that film really highlights the fact that the parents are the real superstars."

The film features Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh in key roles, alongside 10 debutant neurodivergent actors: Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, Vedant Sharma, Naman Misra, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Ashish Pendse, Samvit Desai, Simran Mangeshkar, and Aayush Bhansali. 'Sitaare Zameen Par' earned Rs 265 crore globally, establishing itself as one of the highest-grossing films of the previous year.
Aamir's Support for 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge'
In addition to discussing his own project, Aamir Khan extended his best wishes to 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', which has been performing strongly at the box office. He remarked, "I believe it’s doing really well. I have not seen the film yet, but I hear only praises for the film, ‘Dhurandhar’ one and now part two. Both the films have done exceptionally well and my very best wishes to the team."
