Arya's Extreme Underwater Challenge for Spy Thriller Mr X Revealed
Actor Arya, who portrays one of the lead roles in director Manu Anand's highly anticipated spy thriller Mr X, has now revealed the extraordinary physical demands he faced while filming a crucial underwater sequence for the movie. The sequence, which serves as the film's opening shot, was captured in a specialized 20-foot deep diving pool located in Mumbai.
Unprecedented Depth and Extreme Conditions
Sources close to the production unit have disclosed that Arya descended a full 20 feet into ice-cold water, completely bare-bodied, while holding his breath for a scene that director Manu Anand has described as unprecedented in Tamil cinema. This stands in stark contrast to the standard practice in Indian filmmaking, where most underwater sequences are typically filmed at a depth of only six feet using submerged stages.
For Mr X, however, such conventional methods were not an option. The sequence required Arya to descend to 20 feet to authentically simulate the deep ocean environment. This depth presented extreme physical challenges, most notably the frigid water temperature, which consistently ranged between 15 and 16 degrees Celsius.
Arya explained the difficulty: "As we go deeper, the temperature of the water reduces significantly—it was around 15 to 16 degrees, truly ice-cold water. Performing the scene bare-bodied meant my body shouldn't shiver at all. Controlling that shivering while simultaneously holding my breath for 30 to 40 seconds of action was an immense and daunting task for me."
Marathon Underwater Sessions
The actor had to maintain complete physical control to prevent any visible reaction to the freezing conditions, all while delivering a convincing performance that the camera had to capture believably. The logistical demands of the shoot extended the physical strain far beyond individual takes.
To maximize efficiency and avoid the time lost through repeated ascents and descents, Arya and the specialized underwater camera crew remained submerged for extended periods of one-and-a-half to two hours at a time. The actor has characterized this experience as the most physically challenging of his entire acting career.
Arya recounted the marathon sessions: "Once we went underwater, the entire camera team and everyone involved stayed down there—we could only resurface after one and a half to two hours had passed."
Advanced Technical Setup and Artistic Satisfaction
Despite the harsh conditions, the underwater set was equipped with advanced technology. Sources highlighted that underwater speakers and microphones were employed, allowing Arya to hear director Manu Anand's instructions clearly and receive real-time feedback on his performance between takes.
Reflecting on the grueling process, Arya expressed his satisfaction with the final result. He stated: "At the end of the day, when you see it on the screen, I am very happy about the output of this sequence. When audiences watch the film, they will truly understand the significance and impact of this particular scene."
