Veteran Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away, CM Fadnavis Announces State Honors
In a tragic development for the world of music, legendary singer Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday, triggering an outpouring of grief across the nation. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed profound sorrow, declaring the day as one of deep mourning for music itself, and confirmed that her final rites would be conducted with full state honors in consultation with her family.
CM Fadnavis Pays Tribute to a Musical Icon
Speaking to the media in Nagpur, CM Fadnavis described the moment as extremely tragic, noting that another star from the illustrious Mangeshkar family has left us. "For most of her life — from the age of five or six — she served music till her last breath. If one had to name the most versatile singer in this country, it would undoubtedly be Asha tai," he stated, highlighting her lifelong dedication to the art form.
Fadnavis emphasized Bhosle's unparalleled range as a performer in Indian music history. "She rendered classical songs with depth and also sang very modern compositions with equal ease. Whether it was classical music, pop, rock, or bhavgeet, she sang in more than 30 languages. A rare example in the world, she performed a three-hour concert at the age of 90," he recounted, showcasing her extraordinary versatility and endurance.
Personal Memories and State Recognition
Recalling a personal anecdote from a radio jockeys' programme, Fadnavis shared how Bhosle made him hum a couple of lines on air. "She then said, 'See, I have the power to make even the Chief Minister of Maharashtra sing.' That was her lively personality," he said, illustrating her charismatic and engaging nature.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that the state had honored Bhosle with the prestigious Maharashtra Bhushan award, and her accounts of the struggles she faced in her journey left a lasting impression on him. "We were certain that while we could not celebrate the centenary of Lata Mangeshkar, we would definitely celebrate Asha tai's 100th year. Unfortunately, time did not give us that opportunity," he lamented, reflecting on the missed chance to mark her milestone.
A Global Loss for Music
In his concluding remarks, Fadnavis expressed the magnitude of the loss. "A renowned, globally celebrated singer with a divine voice has left us. I feel that for music, today is a deeply sorrowful day," he said, underscoring Bhosle's international acclaim and the void her passing creates in the musical landscape.
The announcement of state honors underscores the high regard in which Asha Bhosle was held, not just as a singer but as a cultural icon whose contributions spanned decades and genres. Her legacy continues to resonate with fans and fellow artists alike, marking an end of an era in Indian music.
